Woodgate first team coach !!

Its just a laugh for Gibson isn’t it?

No Boro fan, not one has been saying
‘let’s get Woodgate back in sone capacity’

And now some on here are having a go at others for being negative about th3e appointment.

Tell you one thing - Gibbo is a good Tory.
He knows how to reward incompetence and split the fans.

I'm sure that is aimed at me and I answer it pretty easily.
Woodgate was taking this club into the third tier and was an appalling appointment.
I am absolutely certain that Michael Carrick did not propose this man and has been positioned.
I'm really disappointed Carrick has accepted this gift of first team coach and look forward to other worthless gifts in January.

Woodgate has been universally ridiculed since his disastrous time here. How can it possibly be a good appointment?
So no Viv, I am not positive about what the club has done.
I sincerely hope Carrick is superman - he is going to need to be. Good luck to the lad.
Not aimed at you! It’s more general. Look at the comments in here, Carrick is playing second fiddle already.

The truth is that nobody knows if it’s a good appointment. Unless you’re a player in his sessions, engaging with him, working with him, you don’t know. There’s a history of people who can coach but can’t translate that to management.

I think what I find interesting is that nobody waits to see if results improve. If they don’t then feel free to complain and question, but if they do then… where will the focus switch to next? Who gets it next.

Not aimed at you, that last bit. But this rush to doom-laden judgment, it’s just so predictable and tiring. Let’s see how they get on first.

Let’s not forget Woodgate went to Bournemouth as a coach, prior to being made caretaker shortly after. There’s clearly a lot more to his coaching ability than just being a local lad.

I also think that as poor as we were under him, he did try to play attacking football and the first half against Brentford that season (might have been first home game) we played really well. They sussed us out and we didn’t have the ability to deal with it. His inexperience and the financial constraints he was working under were ultimately his down fall, as well as not appointing an experienced number 2.

I’m fully behind Carrick and whoever he wants on his staff. Looking forward to the next chapter.

because our fans are so knowledgable about football, and so we should be listening to what they have to say on managerial appointments

. ..and so people wonder why this board gets a ridiculing from other fans, there're literally nothing that this board can't turn into a bashing of the Conservative party, and I say that as a card carrying member of the Labour party.

You are right in that we don’t know what the outcome will be.

It‘s fair to look at past records though isn’t it?
Woodgate was assistant coach for 2 years leading up to Pulis getting sacked - he has to take some responsibility for performance over that period.
Hope there is no dispute over his car crash of a managerial career with us.

Bournemouth - something a bit different.

Not surprising some are pessimistic

I think some fans need to get a grip. Anyone but Woodgate as first team coach is a crazy position to take!

I do feel very negative about Woodgate coming back but I don’t want that to cloud about how I feel about Carrick and I’m one hundred percent behind Carrick. It’s typical Gibson as it’s made us all a bit ***ed off but I’m really hoping he’s got it right. Come on Carrick!

We finished 6th and 7th when Woodgate was coaching. It would’ve been 6th and 6th if Derby County hadn’t been cheating. And Pulis wasn’t sacked, his contract ran out and Woodgate was promoted.

Its all kicking off isn’t it?
You decided to quote only part of my post - ignoring the line that added isome context.

‘The one saying ‘ and now some on here are having a go at others for being negative about the appointment’

You see, in the context that no one was asking for him to come back it shuldn’t be surprising that some are negative,

If you don’t get the ‘context’ just ask

Maybe that’s why the board gets ridiculed.

I get your context thanks, I still think it was a daft post.

Seems like Gibbo wanted someone who knew the club and structure (insurance policy who knows). They obviously worked their magic on Carrick, who was probably unsure of this set-up. Surprising as it will be his neck on the line. However he's now agreed to this, so up to him and the club to make it work. Personally, I think we needed a total fresh start, but let's get behind Carrick and his team, and see how it goes. UTB.

In fairness, I'd imagine being head coach/manager is very different to being a first-team coach.

Many of us would like Phelan to be appointed, to be part of the coaching team however he struggled when he had a short stint as manager at Hull.

True

I agree with this. Fans (including myself) would have loved Carrick bringing in Phelan and Meulensteen

But in reality... Phelan managed Hull and was sacked within 82 days after 3 wins in 20 games, and Meulensteen only managed 4 wins in 17 games too for Fulham.

They were both in the PL - but it shows management and coaching are two totally different roles. Woodgate might excel as a coach - nobody really knows.
