The republicanism thread.

I certainly welcome a conversation on the future of the Monarchy at the very least

If a vote was to take place tomorrow I honestly don`t think I know enough to vote either way.

I obviously want a fairer society in the UK but I have my concerns

Would it be better to modernise the Monarchy, start trimming the edges like taking back in to state ownership the properties and land that the Royals don`t own

I honestly don`t know enough, so could be talking rubbish tbh

We should talk about it at least

so she didn't vilify her, she said nothing in public.
The women died in a horrific accident, and the public expected comment....the queen went and hid in Scotland to avoid saying anything. Blair chased her down and had to pressure her into saying something.

thats not the point we can debate the role of the monarchy without the single nuclear outcome being a republic. I am more concerned with the land assets and wealth which really belongs to the state not the monarch, which frankly needs redistributing from king Chuck's pocket
....and all of the aristocracy. If you can't prove you bought the land, or your family bought the land, then it isn't yours, you can't keep conquested lands.

President Truss or King Charles? I’d go with “chuck” every day of the week.
not a fair and honest comparison because there have been terrible PMs and terrible kings. The difference is the terrible PMs get voted out and we have to wait 25 years for the terrible king to die

We had a referendum on PR btw it failed massively.

PR is far from a panacea either.

First we need to establish which version we mean by PR as they differ massively.

PR also allows extremist parties and views to thrive.
It was alternative vote, not a true PR system that many of the public want. I've talked with many people for years about PR before we had the vote, and not one of them described the alternative vote system on offer.

I discussed AV at the time, and the feeling was that many that wanted PR would not vote for AV as it would lesson the chance of proper change to a real fiar representation.

Bit it’s not though as this shoe horns in those that may not otherwise get elected as can you imagine the cronyism that would happen if he tories could name their list.

And no one is really accountable either as no one is really elected.
If people are stupid enough to vote for that party in numbers, we end up with what we deserve.

But it is.

It’s not the version you want but STV is proportional representation. It’s often heralded as the greatest example or PR as no votes are wasted.
AV as put to the referendum is not proportional, but is more proportional than the current system.

It is still possible in AV for the Green party to poll 10-15% of the national first choice vote and end up with just Caroline Lucas on her own in parliament again. That ISN'T proportional representation by any stretch of the imagination. It's a disproportionate system, just not quite as disproportionate as the current system.

Party List is by far the fairest system.
The trouble with that system was evident when MEPs became elected that way after initially being FPTP. The candidate's direct connection with the voter was lost and voter apathy and antipathy to EU ensued. The other negative impact is party apparatchiks / brown- nosers with no local connection get on the list

Anything's better than FPTP

Absolutely it will be a cronyism charter.

Diaspora politics is DANGEROUS just look at the EU to see how radical droplets can become a real force under PR.

More terrible Pms get appointed or voted in sadly. That’s the nature of our electoral system. We have had 4 in a row now. We won’t have a terrible king because he won’t have enough power to make your life a misery.
