In what tangible sense though? Fully comprehend it's an emotional time for some but in terms of the "wheels stopping turning" for instance, what actually changes? That's the bit I'm struggling with.

Accept that, but what does that actually mean in terms of an inability for those countries to function? It's a ceremonial position with little/zero bearing on day-to-day life and business in those countries.

If the protocol has been enacted, then behind the scenes of every institution that involves the Queen will be frantically working to ensure that the wheels don't stop.
 
Yeah must admit the Stock Exchange one surprised me. I guess the simple answer is that other than "protocol" nothing actually HAS to stop, i.e. the existing monarch dying doesn't actually have any tangible impact on "normal life" continuing.

Pubs will very much stay open I believe.
