Post your little known musical factoids

Reni left in early 1995, John Squire left the band April 1996. Slash’s manager wanted to manage The Stone Roses, Slash announced in October 1996 that he was no longer a part of Guns N' Roses. Brown and Mani turned down the offer and dissolved the remains of the group October 1996.

I think it would have been interesting. Pretty sure Ian Brown and Mani regret not seeing how that might have turned out rather than dismissing the idea straight away over Slash’s leather trousers. Ian Brown’s first album ‘Unfinished Monkey Business’ had a few shots aimed at John Squire.

“I only ever wanted the one with the flag
But all you ever wanted was a sixty dollar bag
And a cheap limousine for your deep pile dream
On the highway”

The one with the flag being the first album and the sixty dollar bag being cocaine..

One a similar note John Squire’s band The Seahorses split up citing ‘creative differences’ - those creative differences were John Squire wanting to do a concept album based on the video game ‘Tomb Raider’

Make of that what you will.
Wow my fave band and I never knew any of this! Slash with the Roses would have been epic. Yeah unfinished monkey business was savage with Squire. I believe the Roses even played ice cold cube after he left

Boogie nights, Always And Forever by Heatwave and Rock With You, Off The Wall and Thriller , Michael Jackson, were all written by an Englishman born in Cleethorpes in 1949 called Rod Temperton 🤷‍♂️
Rod Temperton is a really interesting character. He’s well worth researching on YouTube. There are a couple of short documentary type videos about him. He wrote the Vincent Price speech for Thriller in the taxi on the way to the studio. He also wrote or co wrote a lot of other huge hits, despite having a terrible singing voice. Some of his demos are on YouTube and he’s truly awful.

The Led Zeppelin song Black Dog has Robert Plant is singing about a woman who appeals to his prurient interests, but is clearly no good for him - he tells himself he'd rather have a "steady rollin' woman" come his way.

The band worked up the song at Headley Grange, a mansion in Hampshire, England that is out in the country, surrounded by woods. A nameless black Labrador retriever would wander the grounds, and the band would feed it. When they needed a name for this track, which didn't have an obvious title, they thought of the canine and went with "Black Dog."

Not only was Chris Spedding a Womble but so too were Steeleye Span
The entire band donning the furry suits at Mike Batts request when TOTP bosses demanded a 'live' performance

Rod also wrote “ Give me the Night” and “ Love X Love” two of George Bensons better known tracks.

Leigh Matty, lead singer of AOR band Romeos Daughter was a backing singer for Michael Ball at 1992 Eurovision with One Step Out of Time.
One news paper describe them as dressed like NatWest band Employees

When Howard Devoto left the Buzzcocks to form Magazine, Robert Lloyd of the Prefects and the Nightingales was asked (by Richard Boon I think) to replace him. Thankfully, for both the Buzzcocks and the Nightingales, this never happened.

The Paul Simon hit Mother and Child reunion, actually refers to a chicken and egg dish served at a restaurant. (so I was reliably informed).

Going back many many years, Alan Price recorded a song called The House That Jack built. It was about Cherry Knowle Hospital in Ryhope - he had a relative who was in there and this inspired him to write the song.

There was also the notorious tale about him, told by an ex-bandmate, that he'd gone to London and registered himself as the sole musical arranger of House Of The Rising Sun, when it had been a whole band arrangement. This allegedly resulted in him alone pocketing all the royalties.
