Boro pull out of Larsen deal

Exactly as he now knows 100% that we want him enough to pay 9m for him as I said yesterday

let the games begin.

Btw 9m in the Dutch league esp for a club like Groningen is HUGE.

Some people forget how poor done European leagues are.
I think Groningen have a rich owner, and Larsen said in his interview that they don't need the money.

Probably not. Twitter and news sites like all the drama of "pulling out of deals" etc but things are always less black and white than that i imagine.

Yep. I'm not sure what we've supposed to have pulled out of? We've submitted a new bid, it's been rejected, we're not submitting another.

It's as simple as that surely? Ball is in their court now.

It's not as if we were in the middle of agreeing personal terms and just changed our mind.

One of the major issues we have is that Gronigen are financially stable and don't need to sell. And he's under contract for two years. With an option of a further year.
Further issue - highlighted in his Tuesday interview - is that their Sporting Director is supposedly a bit of a kn*b......so trying to force a deal with an extremely reluctant selling club and immovable personality is going to cost us.
Starting to get a bit messy imo, I think this is a very good time to walk away. Let's see if we can get something sorted for Greaves/Mowatt / CMs and see what's happening with forwards towards the end of the season.
CM is the weakest unit of the team and this is where we need bodies in NOW not two weeks.

9m is still huge in Holland

We didn’t need to sell tav but we still did.

the key now is probably the player and agent. If they kick up a fuss the deal may well happen. Not how it should be, but that's the reality.
We're probably looking at other options while keeping an eye on it

If he puts in a transfer request they would be stupid to try and hang on to him - it would put future players off signing for them

We sold Tav as he told us he wanted a move- that’s the decent thing to do

Let’s see what happens

I don't understand why we won't just make a £9m offer for Amstrong instead.
Armstrong is on PL wages so even if Southampton accepted that (they wouldn't, they paid nearly double that last year) then we'd have to match his wages so the total package would be significantly higher. Coming from the Eredivisie I'd imagine Larsen's wages will be much lower so we could offer him an increase without paying silly money.

Oh most definitely as I say I think we get blinded by the vast sums in the English game and assume the rest of Europe is like that, it isn’t.

Even high end sides pay a fraction of what English clubs do.

This was overmars talking about AJAX let alone Groningen

The Ajax Director of Football suggested that clubs in nations like Holland and Scotland struggle to compete in the transfer market with not only the English Premier League, but also EFL Championship clubs.

Speaking at Aspire4Sport Global Summit at the Amsterdam Arena, the home of Ajax, Overmars told fcbusiness that young players coming through in Holland are always looking to move abroad. “

Just read on Twitter that the player and club agreed before the summer than he could go for 13m euro's, and we offered 11m euro's. Can't find the tweet again now though :/

To put this in perspective

The highest transfer fee received is €10.5 million from Hamburger SV for Swedish striker Marcus Berg in 2009, while the highest transfer fee paid by the club was for Nigerian midfielder Oluwafemi Ajilore from Midtjylland in 2008; he was bought for a fee of €3.3 million.
I expect he will be furious with Groningen, he'll be in the office this morning, saying enough, let me go. It's a fair fee.

To put into perspective further, when they sold Luis Suarez, now their second highest sale, it was for £6.75m. We've made an astronomical offer by their standards

Id be very concerned if we even considered blowing £9m on an unproven punt and therefore this is good news.

We have to learn to acquire bargains and potential as the blueprint for the future not expensive gambles.

all signings are punts, nobody is proven to score for us. I'm sure he's been well scouted, we're not just chucking money at someone without any view of their ability.
