Boro managers DO NOT chuck the cups away

Get rid of that sports science nonsense! In my day they played 500 games a year!
It’s the second week of August. We’ve got people saying our players need games and minutes - including the manager - while on the other hand they seem to be saying those l players shouldn’t be risked. It’s just excuses for the most part. At this stage of a season it is anyway IMO.

We have a realistic chance of getting promoted. We don’t have a realistic chance of winning the cup though

I think the reverse.

Beat Barnsley at home and suddenly you're 7 lucky draws/matches away from winning our second ever cup.

Realistically we look nowhere near going up this season.

Btw as much as enjoyed the spurs win there no doubt that the Chelsea game and the hype and preparation around it derailed the season it was too big a game at the wrong time of the season

Bull. We were poor, they were just worse. You do have to give youngsters a chance, when they're ready for it and surrounded by senior pros, not other kids.
Fry, McNair, Dijksteel, Smith, Watmore. Plenty of senior pros on the pitch. Some of these lads tonight have been with the club a while, are in their 20s - when else do you give them a chance?

Clearly not what I mean.

Wilder seems bullish on the fact we're bringing 5 more in.

The squad that started the window will be different to the squad that ends it.

A week ago we were going to have 2 new signings starting at QPR. It's just words isn't it? What else would he say? They've got tickets to sell for this next weekends matches.

Get a grip, what do you expect us to do, play a full strength side when we’re massively short on numbers and risk injury for the games that matter?
I have to be honest, and I apologise for swearing, but I absolutely f*cking hate it when Boro managers pick teams of kids for cup games. Blooding one or two, one or two on the bench, no problem. But leaving out the core of the first team tonight or any night is just not on for me. I hope the chairman b*llocks him for it.

I always remember McClaren saying that after he played the kids one year at Ipswich and we lost 3-0 or 3-1, and we got a good pasting, the chairman phoned him and said “we don’t do that at Boro, we’re a cup team.”

It also flies in the face of what Wilder said about the cups when he took the job. Chucking games of football away, I can’t get my head around it. We need to find fitness, form, sharpness and confidence.

He’s piled the pressure on ahead of Sunday now, and I’ve little or no sympathy TBH.

Completely agree Viv. That team selection I could understand to a certain extent (didn't agree with it at all though), but to not have the likes of Crooks, Jones, Giles etc on the bench should they be needed was criminal. His subs basically chucked it away as well, that team we finished with was absolutely ridiculous, and a big slap in the face to all of us who made the effort to go.

Really hate it when managers see the cups as an inconvenience. I've had some of my best Boro memories in the cups, and we've had some of our best days/nights as a club in them too. To effectively not even bother to give it half a go is shocking.

We also need momentum and a lift after a poor start to the season. Getting a win tonight with a good team out would have given everybody, team and fans, a lift, surely?

Just spotted it would have been Leeds away in the next round too. Ffs.

Again, logically you should be saying the same about the Sheff Utd match as well now.

They're a better side, they'll win anyway and be up near the top end of the table, save our better players for the relegation six pointers...

If they know theyre puttng the reserves out then they should only charge a reserve team ticket price.
Its taking the fans for granted. Not to mention just how fuc.king insulting it is.
We are just punters to Wilder.

I am a big fan of Wilder, but the 'punters' phrase he uses does my head in. I'm sure he won't mean it how the word comes across, but we're fans, not punters.

:ROFLMAO: It's 3 games in to the season?

What part of the sports science is freezing players out of pre-season and then suddenly playing one of them anyway?
It's a long season, they're not doing it because they need the rest now, it's to prevent injuries down the line from overloading. Wilder's injury record since he came in has been brilliant so I'd trust them to get this kind of thing bang on.

It’s a pointless cup game for a competition we arent going to win, I can’t really see any justification for risking players.

Would you be happy if we won 3-0 tonight but Giles or Jones are injured for the next few games?

Giles and Jones played at QPR didn’t they?

The players only just had a rest in the first half v QPR 😜

I honestly think he would be

I don’t get it either.
