Viktor Gyökeres

Dwight Gale is still mopesing about in the under-23`s up the road.
Perhaps if he accepted hes not worth what hes being paid - and struck a decent deal with us - he might find he can be part of the team?
What's his incentive to do so when he's on a massive contract?

In a thread about Viktor Gyökeres, it must have been long odds that Dwight Gayle would be the man to have his name spelt incorrectly! ;)

It shows that it's "just a job" for some players. I'd probably take 40k a week to do absolutely nothing but train if I was him too.

Of course his priority is money - it would be the same for every one of us!

Agree. No-one chooses to do more work for less money.

Play daft games with the U23s, no pressure for 40k/week
OR
Play every week in the championship, where you haven't played properly for years; fans expect miracles and will hate you if you fail, for 25k/week? - £780,000 per year less.

There’s a myth around Britt that his form and technique dipped when we signed him, it never.

His form/style actually dipped after his horrendous injury at forest that’s why there was a change in his style and form. We bought a player who was never going to reach those heights again for top dollar.

Some people have a professional pride. I'd have thought he's earned enough money to retire on so why should it be all about the money, he's not living on the bread line.? You'd think he might want to actually play some proper football and achieve more before he hangs up his boots.

He was a player that was quick and strong and dynamic. He never really had good technique.

Once he had the injury he lost a bit of pace, he couldn't run with the same power, wasn't as quick off the mark, but still had that poor technique.

Reference Gyökeres only having one good season so far.
That sometimes happens when young strikers have breakthrough seasons.
For example, Shearer scored 9 goals in 77 games before scoring 13 in a season, prompting Blackburn to buy him (age 23).

This is true

Just been having a read of the recent Coventry Telegraph articles online to see if there are any hints of what may be going on. Seems the fans down there are all in a bullish mood and are expecting a very good season themselves. Think if we do get him from a potential promotion rival it would be a real statement of intent .

professional pride is something you might have when you're in a career spanning 40-50 years with a steady retirement pot. Probably fairly rare in an Industry where 99% of peoples earnings stop abruptly when they hit 35 or so and over 40% declare bankruptcy within 5 years.

Yeah they earn eye watering amounts but their lifestyle doesn't change because they've retired and they will have wives, girlfriends and families to provide for, sometimes for the next 50-60 years and any income post playing is likely to be chicken feed

Playing a few extra games of footy and appeasing fans of a club you have no connection with yet probably features pretty low on his priority list compared to providing the best possible future for his kids, partner and himself

His injury was in 15/16, and in 16/17 he had his best "goals per minute" of any year (when Forest finished 21st, good return for such a low finishing side).

In 14/15 his numbers were not far behind, but Forest were a better team then and they were 12th before he got injured, and were 19th by the time he came back.

His numbers were worse for us, but strangely enough, under Monk he scored 11 in 23 games, but only 4 after that under Pulis.

Just seemed to me to be a striker who didn't suit Pulisball or playing in a defensive team, lacking creativity, and 19/20 wasn't so bad considering he was playing under Woody, with quite a poor team. Think he'd had enough after that.

I think Assombalonga is a bit of a right place right time man, he might not have been the greatest finisher (not many are in the champo), but if you get the ball in the box on the deck then he'll find space and put the ball in the net enough times.

Sounds great. Where do you want us to deposit the £15m?

This would make sense of he was at someone like Man City and could go to somewhere like Spurs/Everton/Newcastle but Gayle is a player who isn't going to enhance his reputation by playing well for Boro. He's already regarded as a player that is a very good championship player but not quite good enough so if he goes anywhere it'll be somewhere that either pays him what he's on now or gives him the chance to prove that he is a PL quality player. He's not going to earn another big move in the future, he's too old.

He's got very little to gain by taking a paycut to play championship football.
