National Rail Strike

Reminder that many of the benefits we take for granted in work we’re likely due to strike action
I’d SAY all the so called benefits.

as very few “rights” were given they have all been hard fought.

Trade unions have fought for laws that give rights to workers: the minimum wage, maximum working time, paid holidays, maternity and paternity leave, equal pay for work of equal value as well as anti-discrimination laws etc.

Well yes, I was being tounge in cheek, my pay rises have been pretty poor but thats my problem and won't be the broad experience, that is what the private sector is though. The point is you get what your given, and its on you, "me in this instance" to improve your own situation on the private sector, so "again tounge in cheek" i am a tad cynical of what is broadly speaking, a well paid job "compared to the wider public sector" and once again, not cleaners, claiming that 40k plus is not a good living, once again, im sure they earn that money and deserve it, and I also understand that they want to keep it that way by keeping pace with inflation. I do get the I.mpession that anyone who doesn't agree with the RMT is an "idiot" and talking nonsense on here though no matter what they say.

Why are you fixating on this 40k figure as though that is all this is about, and comparing them to cleaners.

Cleaners are on strike too.
Those on 40k + who are striking are doing so FOR the cleaners too.

There is much much more to the strike than just salary.
Go and look at what it is they are actually striking over.
I’m really sorry, but I’m not sure why people are getting fixated on salaries when there is so much more to this strike than just pay. Seems the Tory bluff and right wing media misdirection is actually cutting through with some folk.

Take a look at this. These are the people on strike. I’ve highlighted some that possibly won’t be on anywhere near 40k.
Regarding many of those that are not highlighted, they will be earning 40k + only because of the amount of overtime they work.

(Edit, also probably still plenty on that list that I’ve not highlighted, that don’t earn 40k)

The people who are fixated on salaries are too ignorant to bother conversing with. They are like Johnson fan boys who just sit in a corner with their fingers in their ears shouting LA LA LA. Ignorance is bliss for people who are scared of change.

Don't mind them on the whole apart from Don't think striking works.
Doesn't give a good message to younger ones.
If teachers follow which they probably will, i really think that it is wrong.
It just does work though. It amazes me people still think like you. Are happy to accept whatever bad conditions and oppression we are given

I've never understood why people wouldn't want better lives for others. Most of the country are criminally underpaid compared to the cost of living and yet we insist on bringing everyone down which only helps the rich.

Over the last 12 years the "I'm alright Jack" attitude has been encouraged by the Tories. They make people feel good because they know there place but there is always someone to look down on.

I guess after working in the private sector my entire life, where pay increases only happen with promotion mostly, occasionally you may get the odd 1%, i have become cynical.
This is complete nonsense.

Rather than basing this on your on personal experience, or FabioPorkpie's personal experience, surely it makes more sense to just look at the overall picture. This is the sort of thing we can google and get an answer on?

There you go.

"Figures show that across the board, public sector workers have seen their pay fall by 4.3% in real terms since 2010 - compared with a 4.3% increase for their private sector counterparts."

May not match your own experience but the average is clear. Pay rises are more common in the private sector than in the public sector. And that's coming from sky news. Hardly a firebrand left wing outfit is it?

Nothing is ever just your problem, it`s all of our problem....private or public sector.

We all work
We all deserve a fair wage
We all deserve a fair standard of working conditions.

You may feel like you are an isolated case but believe me you are not, talk to your colleagues and they will have similar stories, but feeling like you are on your own is exactly what the paymasters want you to think so you can bend at the knee and take what they believe is all you are worth.

You are worth more than you think.

There's another source. FT.

"Data from the research group XpertHR, published on Wednesday, shows the median public sector pay award was just 1.4 per cent in the year to March 2022, well behind the private sector median of 2.2 per cent for the same period."

The private sector is always skewed by financial incentives for commercial success for a greater number of employees.

Interesting that this government will have talks with the BofE and international finance companies about lifting the bonus cap for bankers (which can be already up to twice annual salary on top of existing salary), but can't take the time to talk to their own employees' representatives to do anything more than offer more than a 5-6% real terms pay cut and 2,500 job losses.

Exactly right, would love to see those who are so against trade unions to try to work a few weeks under conditions before they were around
