Are the Killers the biggest band to play in Middlesbrough?

Just thinking about the concert at the Riverside next week and it made me wonder who the biggest band are to play in the Boro.

I know we've had the likes of the Beatles, Oasis, the Smiths off the top of my head but weren't they before they really became big names?

Who would be the biggest band/artist to play in the town when they were at the height of their fame?

You could say bands I have mentioned were on the way up but Killers are not great now although I liked their last album.

You're comparing the Killers with the Beatles. 😆😆

What about The Stones, Bowie. Etc etc.

Of course I'm not comparing them with the Beatles 😂

The Beatles played in 1963 at the Astoria which is now the empire if I remember rightly, so they were obviously no where near as famous then as they went on to become.

The question is the biggest name who were somewhere near their peak and not in the early stages of their career.

I'm not saying its the killers I'm just trying to start a discussion.

I'd say yes for Ozzy, it was Blizzard of Ozz with Randy Rhoads. Jimmy Page was completely wasted though 😁

Class!

I should have started a thread with who are the biggest bands to play in the Boro even if it was before they were famous. I've looked on Google but can't find much information on it.

I've heard a few stories and read a few things on here but The 60s, 70s, 80s was before my era so it would be good to find out.

There was a fairly recent thread about the Rock Garden. Loads of soon to be big bands played there. 60s and 70s must have had all sorts of big names playing around the area, was before my time as well though.

The Who were in Middlesbrough in the 60s. Can't remember where, but the old fella told me Daltrey was a nasty little get who was spoiling for a scrap.

How do you define "biggest". If its on records sold by the time they play in the Town

Killers 28 million

Take That 45 million.

I have no idea where the Who, Beatles, Oasis, Ozzy Osborne etc etc were on their career ladder when they performed in town.

I'll let you decide that 😂

So we've obviously had some huge names play in the town. Most of them in the early days of their careers but still impressive none the less.

It would have been good to have some of them play a big open air concert here in their primes. Just imagine the Beatles at Ayresome Park, the Who at Stewart Park or Zeppelin on Claireville Common. I suppose the town has never been that big of a draw though for world tours!
