2nd hand campervan

Campify is your friend

I had one for about three years. I bought it originally for Glastonbury and then following England in Germany in 2006. I loved it but found it a pain to maintain and had no place where I lived to park it so paid a third party to house it over the winter months. That put the cost up.

If you enjoy camping it’s the life for you as it’s a luxury version holidaying in a tent. Hook up facilities at most camper van sites, ditching your sewage is fine as the chemical toilets these days are thorough.

I can vouch for that. Here in NZ they are incredibly expensive and we live in a country that is built for them. Our campergrounds are first class facilities.

When Covid hit and Kiwis couldnt travel we all wanted to explore our country in a van. The rental companies started to flog off their stock and the prices shot up As Stocko says anybody wanted to buy at the moment if they can wait until overseas travel is fully back to normal then go for it as prices are bound to come back down.

Vans are massively overpriced at the minute,
I strongly agree with this! Hang fire for now.

I live in Devon and lots of my friends have campers. Due to lots of folk holidaying in the UK thanks to Covid the prices went through the roof. Some less than honest folk (not my mates, I hasten to add), have sold some right bangers for a fortune to unwitting 'City Types'.

Yeah, prices of these sky rocketed in the last couple of years due to Covid and everyone holidaying in the UK. People were dusting off their old crappy vans and selling them for a fortune.

I hope the prices go back to normal again.

You need to say what berth and what size required to get any meaningful advice. The cool looking little VW vans might not be much use if you have 6 kids.

Im looking myself, fancy the T6 but some of the Transits look great now. Interiors are all similar.

Crazy money, I just throw a few quid at the raffle sites like Rev Comps when they have one in.

It's the latest 'trendy' thing to do so the prices are rocketing. Wait until people start going back to the Med for their annual two weeks and the prices of vans will plummet (y)

Get it well checked (structurally) and damp checked.

We had what I would call a camper van. It died.

Newxt we are going to get a Motorhome. Something we can spend longer stints in, with a view to doing Europe. From experience, you'll get something pretty good for 40k. Personally, I wouldn't spend that much. I'd probably have a look for something with low mileage for 15-20k

Yep! V true. Lot's of people bought them during the pandemic and the prices went through the roof. I think we will see a lot more second hand ones coming on to the market now.

I'd recommend a motorhome, rather than a camper van. So much more room, especially for a family of 4. Ours is an old Transit base, with a sealed unit on top, but for your budget you could get much newer than our old banger. I'd definitely go for the sealed unit though - no leaks pretty much guaranteed.

Also from Devon, you get hundreds around North Devon.

Plus points, are the lifestyle and the ability to put lots of junk in, surfboards etc.

Downsides, depending on size two people max, unless you upgrade to a motorhome.
Parking, not to easy to achieve around Devon due to the size.
Country lanes, again not the easiest to manoeuvre.
Campsites. unless you have an awning and tents, you can risk losing your pitch, or someone else crowding your area.

I used to have a transit sports van with a view to converting. I was put off due to rust and the awful mpg. I would rather use the money and stay in a nice hotel or b&b.

If you have no experience of caravaning, campervans or Motorhomes definitely hire one for a week and see if it is for you. You need to realise that not only is it your accommodation but your transportation at the same time( this may seem obvious but it means if you want to visit any seaside town , little village or busier town that it can be difficult to part in a camper van.)
Look at different layouts do you want fixed beds above cab for example and bunk beds for kids with th a separate seating area? Do you want shower and toilet or just somewhere to sleep, how long are you going away for at a time.
Also remember that mpg is horrendous on camper van ( my last one a Motorhome which we used for France and Italy and it did 22mpg). We as a family loved it and had many great times away but you do need to understand the cost are not just buying the camper van but. Insurance, habitat checks, storage maintenance. We sold our last one 10 years ago and it cost us £1200 a year to do all of the above every year. Also somewhere safe to store it.
Good luck
