Been coarse fishing today

How does one get into fishing? Dad question probably but none of my relatives partake in it and I've come to fancy trying or recently. Can you get lessons?
It was something that interested me as a kid, but I didn't have anyone to show me how to do it. Around my 40th birthday I had an accident on my lower spine and had to learn to walk again. I had very rarely been out of work and I found it difficult stuck in the house day in day out. One day I decided to go fishing to try and get me out of my rut. I dug some gear out of the garage and bought some bits and got the wife to take me to White House Farm, Great Broughton. Whilst there I got chatting to an older guy and he taught me more about fishing than anyone else. The rest was just practice, reading the Improve your Coarse Fishing magazine and watching Matt Hayes DVD's. Nowadays, you can learn a lot by watching youtube.

I use to run a fishing club at school and had plenty of students take it up.

When things get back to normal, I would be happy for you to tag along.

There use to be a lot of lads on here who fished.

I went over to The Oak's at Sessay today coarse fishing with my youngest son (23). We had a great day fishing and bonding like we use to when he was 9 up until he was 15 - he wouldn't go then, it wasn't cool to go fishing and he became welded to his bed. He's been pestering me to sort out our gear since the start of lockdown so we could go when things opened up and today we seized the opportunity.

We left the house at 7.20 and had our rods in the water by 8.30. We mainly caught Rudd, Roach, Ide and Bream, but he bagged a Mirror Carp around the 3 to 4 lb mark.

An absolutely brilliant day we will both remember.

P.S. I caught more fish than him, but I would say that.

I was thinking about going to The Oaks on Monday....which lake, method & bait were you using.......how is the place fishing atm? Do the fish know that they are not in lockdown?

We fished on Alders using a pole about midway out. I had a light elastic, with a 2lb micro fine line running all the way through to a size 14 hook & then swapped for a size 16 hook - I was happy bagging up on silver fish and seemed to fare better with the smaller hook. Alders is not too deep and I alternated from fishing on the bottom to fishing around 2ft depth.

Bait - We only used maggots (red & white) over a crumb mixed with small pellets & sweetcorn . I usually like to use a hookable pellet but I didn't have any - I did try sweetcorn, but with no luck and reverted back. Red maggot seemed to do better. We bought the maggots from Angler's Choice and glad we did, there was a queue at the on site tackle shop and no one was allowed in. You had to tell the staff what you wanted and they went and got you it.

Fish knowing they are not in lockdown - I started off very fast catching 3 decent Ide and 2 good size Roach in no time and then things died off a little due to the wind getting up. At the end of the day I had 33 fish of a mixed bag. A lot of them where of a good size and others, I've had bigger in a gold fish bowl.

My son caught 31 fish and again it was a mixed bag. He had a beautiful small Mirror Carp that I would estimate weighed around the 4lb mark, a good size Bream and the rest consisted of Ide, Rudd and Roach.

At the moment, you are not allowed to use a keepnet, so it is difficult to give you a weight.

Thanks that’s a bit more information than I was expecting. I have always found it difficult to get through the silvers on alders when fishing maggot, the ide tend to hoover them up all day long to the point where I’ve gone through 4+ pints in a session. I think I might give Cedars a go for a change as you you don’t get a chance to fish it that often due to matches.

Let me know how you do, we are going back on Wednesday.

Will do m8, no worries, how are they taking payments now, is the guy still coming around to collect and is it cash only?
I laughed when I seen it, but it works. The guy comes round with a kiddie's pink fishing net with your ticket in, you take the ticket out and put the cash (cash only) in the net.

How did the fishing at The Oak's go?

We are back there tomorrow.

Well, I went and I wish I could say that I bagged up but that would be a lie, I caught 12 carp from 1-3lb but it wasnt really a day good for it.
The weather was way too hot and the fish were more interested in sunbathing than feeding. I fished peg 45 on Cedar and even though you could see all the fish over the far bank they just were not interested at all, the majority were caught at around 10m on 8mm JPZ jelly pellets and size 16 hooks at around 3ft deep.

On the up side....I got a t-shirt tan

I have myself - I go in the shower and I look like I've got a ginger skin T-shirt on. :ROFLMAO:

Quick sarnie and back at it.
