NYC Recommendations

Off to New York this summer (second time) for my wife's delayed 40th.

Any recommendations of things to do, places to eat/drink? We've got a few things planned but always keen to hear anything that might have gone under the radar.

Yankees v Red Sox and the New York Derby (soccer) both on while we're there so any tips related to those appreciated.

We're splitting up a couple of weekends in the city with some time upstate - 2 nights in Woodstock and 2 in Beacon as well.

Follow as many independent/art house/indie NYC pages on Instagram as you can. Spent a couple of months in NYC a couple of years ago and all of the cutting edge stuff happens on a whim/short notice. I managed to get an invite to a talk by Darryl McDaniels simply by my missus being active with the custom art house instagram page. I also saw an exclusive pop up exhibition of the history of The Beastie Boys and a one day only showing of art by Shepard Fairey by accepting free invites on instagram (or my missus did). NYC is by far the greatest city in the world.

Brooklyn is the place to be at the moment. https://www.paninishoppe.com/ Anthony and Son Panini Shoppe. The best food I have ever tasted and I have done plenty of travelling. Little corner shop selling the best sandwiches on planet Earth.

Do not go to the Statue of Liberty - it's pretty rubbish.

Otherwise - NYC is a quality place to be. Full of energy and loads going on.
I enjoyed the day trip with Ellis Island thrown in. To stand in that immigration hall and soak up the history is quite an event. People looking up their ancestry in the logs that are kept there is breathtaking to watch. I was/am fortunate enough to have friends in NYC whose children go to school in the city. There is some educational pass for certain age groups that allows the holder to claim tickets for almost every museum and educational experience for free. They can get 6 tickets at a time as well. We saved thousands due to this. My best piece of advice would be to make friends with a parent in NYC.

That sounds more like it. I did well to get my Missus to agree to going to the National History Museum (which is excellent). There's no way she'd agree to more history stuff!

I think we went to 40 museums in 56 days. I am not a religious dude but I really enjoyed the Met Cloisters for it's history and the building is astonishing. It's a b****d to get to however. Original MET, MOMA and Guggenheim are rightfully acclaimed because they are fecking brilliant. Again, Instagram allowed us to have a personal tour with a minor curator at MOMA. To see and hear behind the scenes makes the experience a thousand times more enjoyable.

Thanks for the tips - really appreciated. My wife will be all over Insta so that's covered. Panini shop looks amazing! Definitely going on the list.

We saw the statue from the Staten Island ferry, probably close enough for me.

Did Warhol at Moma last time so may not return there but probably will go back to the Whitney for the Biennial. There's also a Lou Reed exhibition coming to Lincoln Centre that I've got my eye on.

Order "The Banks". The fellas in the shop are ruthless but strike up a conversation. Part of the experience.

The vessel a newly built sculpture building at Hudson yards ( just up from Penn station ) Is worth a look.

If people haven’t mentioned there is a New York pass - not sure of the cost but can be used all over the city - so Empire State and rickerfella, the boat trip , the museums and so on. 100s of attractions and will save you dollars if you boat at least one or two a day.

Woodstock... the music festival was actually held at Bethel NY. It's nowhere near either Woodstock or Wallkill. They do have good concerts in the summer (Covid allowing).

The get on/get off bus tours of Manhattan are great for giving you ideas of where is worth exploring. Everyone likes different stuff. I keep posting it on here on every NYC thread but nobody ever goes to St John's Cathedral. It's the biggest in the world, it's massive, it's still being built (150 years since) and it has lots of interesting exhibits of NY life, especially firefighters, who have had a very tough time over the years. St John the Unfinished is on Amsterdam Ave at 112th st. Nobody ever goes uptown.

Any idea of websites to purchase one of these tickets?

Whats the crack with Broadway shows? Wife wants to go to one but there doesn't seem much on at the moment. Again, wheres the best place to purchase tickets for shows?

I would recommend going to the New York derby. We went to Yankee stadium to watch the game. You could have a beer watching the match which was a pleasant surprise. We got the train from Grand central station to the stadium. Plenty of fans friendly and happy to chat.
Have a walk on the Highline and go across to Staten Island on the ferry (it’s free) and get to see the Statue of Liberty. Best city in the world. 379581EE-0500-4706-978C-9936C9563C09.jpeg

Besides the v obvious Empire State and Liberty/Ellis:

pop in the lobby / book to stay at the Chelsea Hotel
free return trip on the Staten Island ferry
walk across Brooklyn Bridge
Go to UN building lobby
Jekyll and Hyde club
McSorley's ale house
MoMA
Central Park for lennon memorial/Dakota building
Look at Chrysler bldg and inside Grand Central Station

Broadway show tickets, use the tckts booth below the red stairs in Times Sq. Savings of up to 50% available depending on times and dates.

Ellis Island definitely. Really interesting (it was shut the only time I took the fam due to the Hurricane, so would love to take them back)
We stayed on Staten Island so took the ferry over to Manhattan nearly every day, with great views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan sky line and the bay. And it's free. Just go back and forth once
We had a car so had a day out driving the Hamptons through Long Island, back via Amityville (saw the house) and Rockaway beach

I'm hoping there might be a gig at Levon Helms place, just up the road. Also probably do a hike to big pink. We tried to stay there but was booked out, next time!
