Swear Filter

Weird - on another post the swear filter kicked in......
You can’t say shiiiit but can say ****

Apparently only plural

I’ve always wonder how football message board get around the obvious clashes -
Arsenal
Scunthorpe
Etc

What’s the point having a swear filter at all when there are no consequences for using substitute characters? Either ban all forms of swearing or allow everything.

Maybe Rob has better information than I. Personally, I prefer not to read stuff that's littered with profanity ... despite being a foul mouthed oik myself. It's fine when it's well placed ... can be funny etc... but I'd prefer it without. Plus you have to be a bit more creative when making substitutions (ie feck), which tends to make usage more selective. And I'm not sure that holding Sunderland fans up as role models works for me. :sneaky:

If you can't navigate your way around the profanity filter, you're a bit stilted imo, it's pretty ******* easy to do

If you feel the need to consistently use multiple profanities in your writing then it does indicate a severe lack of vocabulary. I'd hope that persistent offenders would be banned. The board rules are there for a reason so we should endeavor to follow them for the benefit of everyone.

Dood - it doesn’t indicate a severe lack of vocabulary at all.
Didn’t know there were Board rules around swearing - if there are, I’ll gladly follow

Banter is fine, as are the attempts to circumvent the swear filter ... as long as they are mild/amusing/NOT LIKELY TO OFFEND.

I personally think that swearing isn't a sign 9f a limited vocabulary. It just gives you a greater range of expressing emotion IMO.

However I'm glad there is one on here. It'll make it a little more civilized.

Do you have to use so many cuss words?

What the **** you talking about?

just pointing out that it surely isn’t because of advertisers, as this is the only forum I use out of many that actually has a swear filter other than MSE and mumsnet, and those are understandable. Sunderland can absolutely be used as a role model as they’ve been showing how to run a profitable message forum with masses of users for years now. Rivalry aside, it’s one of the best fan sites in the English leagues.

Please don't do the swearing thing. I am trying to go to the match but instead I have to stop what I am doing to edit swear words.

I did say 'consistently' to be fair finny. We all use the odd one for impact, but I doubt anyone would want this place to turn into CoB.

It’s not as binary as that though is it? Same as how we can now have images and gifs and embedded media but it hasn’t become CoB in the few weeks it’s gone live like everyone used to proclaim would happen. What makes CoB be CoB is the people that post there.

I hear swearing all day every day - friends, family, it’s on tv, it’s in films, at work etc - you definitely hear it in tbe match and the concourse, then on here don’t swear because people will get offended 🤷🏻‍♂️ But you can just use words that rhyme with it or use special characters so everyone knows what word was said.
