BOXING DAY HOME RECORD

Call me lazy but can't be bothered to research .
Anyone know what our record is like at home on Boxing Day ( Roofie ? )
My perception of Boxing Day games is that we mostly seemed to be away .
Remember a couple of trips to Goodison back in the day .

My birthday is Boxing Day and in my earlier years our record home or away was pretty indifferent. I remember the win at St James as a stand out.

then later we did Man Utd but my best ever Birthday result was the 3-0 beating of Forest (youth geographical hatred) in the play off final season. Since our relegation in 09 we have a decent record now on Boxing Day in this division.

Bad Boxing Day 4-0 at Goodison, could have gone second. Didn’t win again till Easter

2-2 at Ewood, two for Juninho but last minute equaliser for Rovers

Good ones
Home to Hull, Barry Robson from the half way line.

Newcastle- Wilko solo from the half way line

The best of Middlesbrough's 10 Riverside Boxing Day wins

[Published 2020]

The Boro boys have a particularly good record in December 26 fixtures at the Riverside.

In fact they have won ten of their 14 Boxing Day games on home soil since moving to the Riverside in 1995.

No doubt it has helped the team that Boro usually attract crowds of 30,000 and upwards as fans flock to football to clear their heads of Christmas over-indulgences.

In the years which followed the end of their long spell in the Premier League in 2009, Boro won five consecutive St Stephen’s Day fixtures at the Riverside without conceding a goal.

Since then they have won two and lost one at home, including last year’s 1-0 defeat of Huddersfield thanks to Djed Spence’s first ever league goal.

The best of the ten Riverside wins arguably came in 2002, when Steve McClaren’s Boro thumped champions-to-be Manchester United by 3-1 in front of 34,673 fans.

Boro were missing influential midfielder George Boateng, who had picked up an injury in the first half of a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal a few days
before Christmas.

Boateng’s place in the engine room was taken by Mark Wilson, who like fellow midfielder Jonathan Greening was lining up against his former club.
1640290225979.png
McClaren made a second change with Joseph Job coming in for 21-year-old Aussie Luke Wilkshire.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson welcomed back Roy Keane for the first time since the Irish international was injured in August.

Keane joined a United line-up which contained the likes of Ryan Giggs, Juan Sebastian Veron, Paul Scholes, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.

David Beckham had to settle for a place on the bench, alongside former Boro target Diego Forlan and £29m British record signing Rio Ferdinand.

With the huge holiday crowd urging them on Boro started strongly, though United had the first chance when Mark Schwarzer made a fine save from a John O’Shea piledriver.

Alen Boksic might have put Boro ahead when he beat the offside trap but his shot was kept out by the legs of his former Marseilles team-mate Fabien Barthez.

However just before half-time Boksic escaped again to meet Franck Queudrue’s superb pass and this time put Boro in front when chipping the ball over the head of the advancing Barthez.

1640288481429.png

Shortly after the interval the Riverside was really rocking when Boro grabbed their second goal.

Szilard Nemeth collected a headed clearance 25 yards out and raced past O’Shea before shooting clinically past Barthez.

Boro ripped United apart again soon afterwards and Boksic went close to a third close when he chipped the ball over Barthez on to the roof of the net.

However United gradually settled and got back into the game on the hour mark when Giggs ghosted in to guide home a cross from Solksjaer.

McClaren responded by strengthening his midfield by bringing on Wilkshire for Boksic.

The visitors brought on Beckham, who went close to grabbing an equaliser only for his 25 yards free kick to be deflected just wide of the target.

As the minutes ticked by, United stepped up a few gears, but they were caught pushing forward when Boro broke quickly.

Boro sub Massimo Maccarone, who had replaced Nemeth, headed a cross into the path of Job, who slotted the ball home for the clinching goal four minutes from time.

It’s a myth that Boro traditionally capitulate every Christmas, though they did have a dodgy run of results after beating United.

In fact they failed to win any of their next six games, including a 5-2 home defeat at the hands of Aston Villa. This was followed by seven games without defeat, so the season had a happy ending.

Remarkably United did not lose another league game that season following their Riverside reverse.

At the beginning of March, they were eight points behind leaders Arsenal, but gradually wore down the Gunners and went on to win the title by five clear points.

The Boro match had given Teessiders their last opportunity to see Beckham in action. At the end of the season he signed for Real Madrid.

Two years before beating Manchester United, Boro took another notable Boxing Day scalp at the Riverside when they beat Gerard Houllier’s Liverpool.

The match was Terry Venables’ third in charge since he was appointed as Boro’s head coach ahead of manager Bryan Robson.

Boro were struggling badly in the relegation positions when chairman Steve Gibson made the decision to bring in Venables to try to steady the ship.

Venables made an immediate impact. His first game brought a 1-0 victory against Chelsea, followed by a goalless draw away to his former club Spurs.

Boro then faced Liverpool on Boxing Day, with a massive crowd of 34,696 squeezing into the Riverside.

Steve Vickers and Robbie Mustoe had both picked up knocks at White Hart Lane, so Venables brought Curtis Fleming and Gianluca Festa into a reshuffled line-up.

Liverpool were on the crest of a wave at the time, having arrived at the Riverside on the back of victories against the Premier League’s top two sides.

They won 1-0 at Manchester United, who were on to go on to win the league, and followed up with a 4-0 hammering of Arsenal.

The Reds included the likes of Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Emile Heskey, Sami Hyypia, Jamie Carragher and former Boro striker Nick Barmby.

Liverpool had the best of the early chances with Owen ballooning a shot over the bar from a Carragher cross, while Boro had a narrow escape when a shot from Heskey was deflected just wide of a post by Ugo Ehiogu.

However it was Boro who broke the deadlock shortly before the interval after Fleming pushed forward and tried his luck with a shot from just inside the penalty area.

Liverpool keeper Sander Westerveld looked to have the shot under control but spilled it, and Christian Karembeu was first to react to shoot Boro in front.

The visitors hit back strongly at the start of the season half and the home fans endured some nervous moments as Owen missed two glorious chances to put Liverpool in front.

Owen paid the price soon afterwards when he was replaced by Robbie Fowler.

Fowler quickly brought a save out of Schwarzer, while Barmby missed the opportunity to mark his Riverside return when missing a chance from just a few yards.

Fowler then missed another glorious chance as the fans began to suffer palpitations. However Boro kept battling under pressure and held out in a nail-biting finale for three useful points.

Afterwards Houllier claimed that Boro played like an Italian team with 11 men behind the ball, which was surely a tribute of a kind.

Just to prove that Boro do enjoy successful festive periods, Boro went on to stay unbeaten under Venables until the end of February.

By this time they had finally escaped from the bottom three and were safe from the threat of relegation. They went on to finish the season well, including notching the legendary 3-0 win at Arsenal.

Happy days indeed.

Man Utd falter at Boro [Man Utd get stuffed at Boro! ;@))]

Man Utd's Ryan Giggs and Boro's Mark Wilson

Chorus-line antics from Giggs and Wilson

Middlesbrough 3-1 Manchester United

Roy Keane's long-awaited return could not prevent Manchester United sliding to a defeat at Middlesbrough that leaves them seven points behind Arsenal.

Keane made his first start since 31 August but former Old Trafford assistant Steve McClaren outwitted his old mentor Sir Alex Ferguson to inflict United's second Christmas defeat.
1640289543671.png

Goals either side of half-time from Alen Boksic and Szilard Nemeth left United chasing a game they failed to catch.
United laid seige after Ryan Giggs pulled one back but were caught as Joseph-Desire Job sealed the points.
Keane initially eased himself back into action in a holding role in midfield, where he struggled to have an influence on procedings.

Boro's big day

43mins: Boksic puts Boro ahead.

47mins: Nemeth doubles the lead.

60mins: Giggs pulls one back for Man Utd.

86mins: Job seals Boro's victory.

An open first half saw the action swing from end-to-end, although initially both sides attacks broke down on the edge of the opponents' penalty area.
Boro keeper Mark Schwarzer was first forced into serious action on 36 minutes when he plunged to his right to beat away John O'Shea's thumping shot.

At the other end Alen Boksic broke clear with Manchester United looking for the offside flag and was denied by Barthez's legs.

Boksic had better luck five minutes later as he again flirted with the offside flag to collect Franck Queudrue's pass and clip the ball over his former Marseilles team-mate Barthez for only his second goal of the season.
1640289581785.png
Any hopes United harboured of a quick riposte after the break were dented three minutes into the second half by Szilard Nemeth.

The Slovakian international collected a headed clearance 25 yards out and all too easily brushed off O'Shea to go on and bury his shot past Barthez.
O'Shea was found wanting again two minutes later when he allowed Boksic to get goal-side and latch on to Queudrue's long ball, but this time the Croatian's attempt to lob Barthez landed on the roof of the net.
1640289600538.png
The visitors's were denied a penalty when former Manchester United midfielder Mark Wilson handled in the penalty area.

And Boro had an escape when Gareth Southgate swung a wild boot at Veron's low cross and just avoided slicing the ball into his own net.
It was game on with 30 minutes left when Ryan Giggs got in front of Ugo Ehiogu to meet Solskjaer's cross and guide the ball into the net.

Boro's Geremi has John O'Shea and Roy Keane for company.

David Beckham came off the bench to line up a free-kick 25 yards, only for his shot to deflect wide off Boro's defensive wall.
United laid seige to Boro's goal but were caught by a sucker punch as Massimo Maccarone nodded a cross into the path of Job to tap the third in four minutes from time.

I am aghast at this stat. I, for years went over chistmas to home games with my dad, on my christmas visit home. I seem to recall, we lost loads. One caveat, it probably wasn't always the boxing day game, but nevertheless, this surprises me.

That boxing day win over Man U was an amazing result.
That team and era was so under appreciated at times by the people on Teesside.
I think we thought it was going to last forever :(
