AXA UK CONFIRMED AS OCCUPIER OF NEW CENTRE SQUARE BUILDING

Middlesbrough Council is also contributing a £2m grant to the project from of its Towns Fund allocation which was provided by the government as part of the levelling up programme.

They (AXA) are only paying rent and I am sure it will be free/low business rates for a number of years.
So they are paying rent right? And bringing employees to spend money in the town?

How did you get your information on what business rates they have to pay?

Yes, this area desperately needs a much improved and integrated transport system, possibly a tram/light railway system to connect all parts of Middlesbrough, Thornaby and Stockton and to link in surrounding areas of Hartlepool, Redcar Guisborough etc. Reading about the pros and cons of the proposed 5000 seat arena in Redcar (that will probably not get built) people were concerned that it would be folly to build it in that location. Ideally it should be possible to have breakfast in Hartlepool, head to Stockton for a few drinks, on to the Riverside for the match, then into Boro for a bite to eat before going to Redcar for a nighttime gig. If you could plonk the Tees Valley area into Germany, people would have days exactly like that, on one ticket and with no designated driver required. In this country - outside of the capital and a few select areas- it's pretty difficult.
There was a vote recently ref an integrated light railway system running initially from Yarm to Redcar I think it was, guess what the result was?
As for attracting AXA to move to the Boro, well done I say £2M well invested

I haven’t got any information on what business rates they will pay.
I never said I had.
You seem certain they are free or low. I was wondering what gave you that certainty, other than your own attempt to, well not sure what you're trying to do, criticise a company for making a profit and investing in Middlesbrough it looks like

The point being is if AXA are just moving jobs from one area to another within Teesside and then benefitting from plush new offices built for them.

If these are additional jobs then fine but not if it just leaves a husk somewhere else.

"Investing" in Middlesbrough till somewhere else comes up with new offer in a few years time, then they will move on.

I didn't get that form his complaining about a company making profit though. Or his comments about the business rate which it appears he's just made up

AXA can afford new offices and don't require any subsidy. No idea on the business rates though.

Again if it brings new jobs to the area, rather than the relocation of existing operations, then great.

Given they have moved offices I'm the region. They are showing very little signs of wanting to leave.

I can't understand why you are being so miserable, negative and cynical here. Maybe thats just you?

Its good to have significant service sector jobs on Teesside. The new industrial projects are creating jobs but not to the numbers lost when ICI and British Steel/Tata/SSI closed/wound down their operations in the last 40 years. Unlike some areas of the UK, Teesside has a relatively large pool of potential quality workers.

You're all aware that AXA are already in Middlesbrough aren't you? As I understand it, both offices, Middlesbrough and Stockton were coming to the end of the lease so moving to one building seems a sensible thing to do.

Yes, from a business sense with a building being built for them it's a no brainer, as long as it does create more jobs rather than relocating their operations to save money at our expense.

The footbridge from Teesdale to Stockton is always busy during the day. Especially with college students but a steady flow of office workers too.
Is or was?

I used to work at Barclaycard and it was busy back then, but now Barclaycard has closed that office, believe Santander have scaled back, Churchill exited and few others moved. Lot of it is up for rent.

For the amount of people that work on site, not a huge volume went into town as most had on-site canteens or people would go to the Sainsburies or the pub.
