Midfield 3 with Payero now fit

I’m not sure how he can get in the team at the moment??

can’t see wilder not playing Tav. Maybe play Crooks deeper in place of Howson? Or could Payero play the deeper role, like Norwood at Sheff Utd?

or could he play as a number 10 just off a striker?

More likely he’ll be warming the bench I think

He doesn’t get in the team right now but there is plenty of time for him to win a place. Crooks for me is quality in his current position. Massive player for us. Payero a Great option to have on the bench though when we are lacking creativity. It’s up to him to earn his spot through training and his sub appearances. Delighted he’s back.

Interesting conundrum. Can't see him coming straight back in. He's going to have to dislodge one of the current threesome. If he gets his chance (injury/suspension) then he needs to grab it.

Before Saturday I'd have maybe played Crooks deep and used Howson as RWB to cover Jones as needed. But with Howson putting in his best display for years and Jones looking good too I don't see how either can be dropped.

It may mean we have more options off the bench to change stuff up as we tire after 60 minutes. I would like to see Crooks deep in a game with Payero and Tav in front of him. Howson isn't going to be the longterm solution at his age or play every game to the end of the season you would think.

I wonder if Wilder is thinking of bringing in a DCM or is happy with his current options?

It seems he sees nothing in JLS as he's not getting a look in, and would rather bring Hernandez on as a closing down / willing runner forward than ether Uche or Coburn. Payero being available will give him another option, bring him on as Watmore tires and push Tav up with Sporar say?

The other side of the returning injured players is that with Fry available, McNair could be moved up to DCM or even RWB to be tried out there. But I think he suits the pushing up CB role pretty well. So Fry may rotate with Bamba as he tires.

Crooks has to start. Howson did well at the weekend but I would prefer for a natural holding midfielder to be brought in this January; a destroyer type midfielder.

That leaves one other midfield position, and for me it's between Tav and Payero for that position. I feel Tav is just about doing enough to justify his place but I'd be happy to see Payero come in if Tavs' form dips.

We also have the option of trying Payero as a no 10, particularly if Sporar continues to not contribute goals.

Agree Crooks is the main man. Looks a complete player at the moment. Hopefully stays that way. Healthy competition anyway between the lot of them. Just glad Tav is playing in his proper position

I think we’ll eventually settle on a back 3 of -
Dijksteel Fry McNair

looks good to me 👍🏻
I think with no signings and maybe Spence back this would be our strongest line up?

I've been impressed with Crooks, and his contributions further up the pitch, but if he could make that position his own by January he may save us a signing allowing more funds for another striker or a proper number 1.

Harsh on Bamba, Peltier, Jones and Howson on their recent performances, but I didn't see any of them as first teamers at the start of the season, but Howson has been very good recently, but you would think age will catch up with him at some point..

I think for keeper you could pick any really, I went for Daniels as he seems to have become Wilder's number 1. We need a like for like for Watmore on the the bench as soon as we can manage it, his energy and closing is really important to how we play now.

I assume that Hernandez and JLS may well be returned in January, Browne and Uche loaned out. I also presume that Woods usage will be based on the CB injury situation in January, he'll either be cover once Wilder has had a good look at him, or loaned out again.

Always said he was a box-to-box midfielder. Warnock was wasting him using him as no 10 and holding midfielder, although he still managed to put in some good performances playing in those roles.

I think he'll finish the season now with double figures in goals and assists.

Payero and Crooks for me, with Howson holding.
I'd drop Tavernier, he has not had a good season at all.

Sporar and Watmore can thrive together with Payero and Crooks.
A new specialist holder might dislodge Howson, but he'd have to be a good un to do so.

I hope Jones can retain his place and am sure Bola will be a very good LWB.

He’s just come back from a few weeks out injured, so he’ll be on the bench until he gets his turn, either through suspension, injury or poor performance. He’ll need to prove his fitness too, the same as Fry and Hall.

McNair is a liability on the left at the back.

Amazed Bamba isn't seem as a starter. Been our best player let alone best defender since coming into the team - that howler against Preston aside. Alongside Crooks and Watmore first names on the team sheet for me.

The obvious player to replace is Howson, but I wouldn't be doing it until he actually puts in a bad performance, he was good on Saturday.

Hopefully Payero is seen as a useful option off the bench by Wilder to start with, we don't want another Siliki situation.

it doesn't matter how he played last march, he's dropped clangers there regularly, easily turned and found himself on the wrong side of the striker. Round pegs, round holes.
Well we need to play a right footer there until we sign a specialist for the position as we don’t have a left footed centre half at the club. And McNair is doing just fine.

Could potentially see Tav sold in January if the right offer comes in? Would need to be silly money for me, but if we bring in a specialist DM and have Crooks and Payero to make up the 3 then we may feel we can afford to let him go, particularly if we have Howson, McNair and JLS as cover.

I don't think it'll be long before Payero nails down his place tbh.
