Ken Clarke - '"dangerously close to elected dictatorship"

I wish I had more faith in Keir Starmer but I just can't come to be convinced, so the lack of a strong opposition will see this situation Clarke alludes to spiral out of control. Whatever polling suggests of late, even during the last month or so of complete embarrassment after another for Johnson personally and within Govt .. I think BJ would easily sweep up again if a GE was called today.

I wish Andy Burnham had beaten Jeremy Corbyn in the Labour leadership race back a few years ago and things might have looked a bit different today. (I was behind Jeremy Corbyn at the time but hindsight, eh)

Absolute mess. I shudder at the thought of what the UK and US could look like come a few years time. That is an understatement, to be honest .. quite like Clarke's column. I don't think he went far enough.

If Andy Burnham became Labour leader before the next election he'd get my vote.

What you have done there is a lengthy post about the people, but nothing about the policies of any of the parties. I also fall into this trap quite often.

I personally think we desperately need a change, the stuck record of incompetence and corruption from the current governemnt needs to be changed.

I honestly believe that Burnham’s decision to abstain from voting on the Welfare Bill in July 2015 is one of the most significant events in recent British politics, a vote against would have neutralised some of the Corbyn support and Burnham would have ended up as Labour leader as a result.

Perhaps with Burnham in charge it might have lead to a more cooperative relationship with Cameron on Brexit which would have resulted in a stronger more coordinated Remain campaign, with a different result we get Osbourne v Burnham fighting a general election, the relegation of Johnson back to the periphery of Parliament and the current shambles we are currently experiencing is averted.

I did say, party jokingly, that if we don't get the tories out at the next election, it may be the last election we have, The tories are dismantling the democatic process bit by bit.

Patels tactic of sneaking a load of amendments into the policing bill at the last minute makes it a very dangerous bill. Once passed in to law you can go to jail for 51 weeks for not following the commands of a police officer. On the back of the Sarah Everard murder, this is clearly ridiculous. The amendment to the bill on stop and search, I believe is the most damaging and no other democracy gives police these powers.

The politicising of the judiciary is coming, which will place parliament outside of the law.

The things that are happening now in the UK are the same steps that happened in Germany and Italy in the 30's.

A lot of people will say that what you say is a wild exaggeration but it is happening in plain sight. Sadly many people are completely unable to grasp the basics and so long as they have the comforts of consumerism soma that will not change.

Yeah my wife, whilst she disagrees with the legislation thinks I am being "overly sensitive". It is easy to underrstand people standing by and assuming it won't effect them. Ultimately it will, and not in a good way.

The human rights act is being repealed as we speak, and whilst there is international human rights legislation, they don't go far enough for democracies and we already know that the tories don't really care much about international law.

For those folks who think the labour party are as bad as the tories, you couldn't be more wrong. It doesn't matter the colour of your rosette at the next election, vote for the party that is most likely to take the seat from tory.
