Anyone travelled around the world, post uni?

My daughter should graduate next June, and then hopes to build up enough cash to travel for 6 months or so.

anyone done this? Any ideas of costs for flights etc, and resources we might use for finding casual work, local travel etc?

as a rough idea, she’s looking at an itinerary something like:

1. East Asia, (Japan, Singapore, Vietnam)
2. Australasia
3. South Asia (India, Sri Lanka)
4. South Africa
5. South America (Buenes Aires, Montevideo, Rio, Santiago)
6.Central/North America Mexico, LA, Vancouver, NY
7. Home

im kind of thinking a budget of £8-10,000 might cover it, but really would appreciate any advice.

cheers

Tommo

BA used to do tickets where if you kept going the same way round the world, you could stop multiple times / change your flights etc. They were great value. (There were also some partner airlines that you could travel on if BA didn't go to a destination) - I've used those a couple of times. Most recent was 2006, so don't know if it's still available. (BA do do a multi-city option when booking tickets on their website though, so that could be something similar)?

I'd also say that if she's only going for 6 months, that looks like an awful lot to pack in. Might be better to go to fewer places, but see them in more depth?

Backpacker hostels can be pretty cheap in some of the countries you mention. I reckon for the budget you mention she could spend a bit longer away (a year maybe??), unless she has a deadline to get back for.

As Cuthbert says, that's a lot to pack into 6 months - you'd spend most of your time on planes / at airports rather than actually experiencing those places.

Budget depends on where she'll stay, and what she's planning to do at each place too.

IDEALLY you want to travel where you can get a free bed - friends and family... I have family in Australia and Canada - never been though :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I'd also give LA a swerve in my opinion, as it's not that great especially compared to places like Vancouver and NYC.
Yeah only the 'tourist' areas seem OK - a lot of LA is pretty rough isn't it?

Then again I did plan a 'dream USA' trip before COVID started... flight from London to San Fran - hire a car.... see the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, then down to LA and onto San Diego across the desert NM, Arizona and into Texas - see JFK location in Dallas and all the way up through Memphis, Washington DC towards NY

A few days at each location, then a flight back to the UK  :ROFLMAO: (y)

Bits of it are rough, bits of it are posh, bits of it are just like any other American city - all of it is connected by many miles of freeway and you really need a car to see it all (or spend a bomb on Ubers).

Your road trip looks good, although a huge amount of driving - you'll go days where you're just stuck on the freeway. You'd be better doing some of it on internal flights.

That's an enormous amount to fit into 6 months. It won't be possible to do more than scratch the surface in six months. There's no point in trying to find work along the way, she won't be there long enough.

I'd cut it to two of the list - maybe north and south America, or Australasia and India.

A trip from Seattle (in the summer) through Washington, Oregon, California, Mexico, Central America, Peru, Chile, Argentina and finishing in Ushaia (in the southern hemisphere summer) would be manageable, with chances to stay a bit in good places and work for a while.

Oh and Los Angeles is great. But don't waste time in LA itself (it's just a boring business district) - there are loads of fun places from Oxnard, Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice, Marina del Rey, Manhattan Beach, Long Beach and on towards Carlsbad, Miramar and San Diego. It's spectacularly nice, the weather is always sunny and there are always lots of people doing the same thing.

Yes I noticed the long distances haha - it was like a 1,300 mile drive from San Diego to Dallas... I thought a plane was a better option

Better to do that as three trips. West Coast is one trip, Texas, Gulf Coast and New Orleans is second trip, and Washington DC, NYC and New England is trip 3. There's easily enough for 2 weeks at each one.

Seems a huge amount to pack in across 6 months, maybe cutting down number of countries/continents to those she really wants would mean she could do more in each place, she might find somewhere she really likes and wants to spend more time there.

Just as examples we had 1 week Vietnam/ 1 week Cambodia, 3 core locations in Vietnam then a week in Siem Reap for 4 days of templing/3 days of relaxing. From the research i did and the places to see just in Vietnam we could have 4 weeks easily and that was scratching the surface, it was Hanoi, Halong Bay and Cuc Phuong.

Couple of years ago we spent 3 weeks in California and again we had to cut loads out, and found some areas we’d have spent more time in. I’ve the loose plans for a retirement trip in a few years time as well and am up to 6 weeks…..and still loads of places to go.

It looks like a “tick things off a list” itinerary, and also looks exhausting. No idea about the budget, but from memory a 4 leg round the world ticket is at least £1200 so given the number of stops and need to minimise travelling time to fit everywhere in I’d guess half that budget would be flights.

A year would give more time to do it all,
