Multiple deaths in Channel dinghy accident

The Times, Telegraph, Mail, Sun, Johnson and Patel all create a myth to suit their narrative. They don't actually tell the whole story. France already grants asylum to twice the number of people (not migrants!) as Britain does. There is a reason why some people want to get to Britain - it's either language, family connections or historical ties. That is the same reason why some people want to settle in France.

Ask yourself this; if a person is willing to attempt a crossing of the English Channel during November in an inflatable dingy how desperate must they be? For anyone who has been at sea, that is pretty terrifying odds.
Yeah that's the depressing thing isn't it. Some people have bene whipped up by hatred enough to question why people come here, use dehumanising names for them and also blame countries taking more people in than ourselves. It's so said how mainstream media has created such a nasty and hateful streak in people.

The Times reports that one of the deceased was an Afghan soldier who worked with British forces. His family decided to risk their lives to cross the channel after the waited 'so long for for help'.

This problem is really one of our own making. We need to open safe and legal routes to the UK now.
Indeed. The media spin the fact that when British forces are fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq or wherever it's good and spreading so-called democracy. Once that's over though people wishing to come to Britain from those places are suddenly migrants and it's all the French's fault.

It's desperate and heartbreaking, our foreign policy is largely the reason these poor souls are in a dire situation seeking asylum, they are then dehumanised by knuckle draggers calling them "illegal".

Because a lot of them would be rejected and revert back to this...
According to the House of Commons Library over half of asylum seekers are accepted on first application, 3/4s of those rejected appeal & approx half of those get accepted. So it is roughly a 2/3 success rate.

A big problem is the backlog in cases, apparently 125,000 in the system this year and that is with c.30k applications in the previous 12 months which was a recent high (although well short of applications in the early 2000s which peaked at 85k a year).

It seems a lot of people on here want this people smuggling to go on unabated.

Surely the problems in Afghanistan or anywhere else should be sorted in that country itself (and if that comes at a cost to the UK so be it) not via more smuggling of people across the channel. This method of migration is just going to worsen the problem.

These people smuggling gangs have been given carte blanche in France and these are the consequences.

This says everything about tories & the media.

The comments of people celebrating on social media are sickening they still believe these people are coming here for the freebies & benefits none of them mention or even know they get more in benefits in France than they do here in the uk.

They actually believe they are put up in luxurious hotels given free pizza & free money to fritter away on anything they want they genuinely begrudge their hard earned tax funding this but yet they have no problem with this tory government lining theirs & their mates pockets with £billions of tax payers money on dodgy contracts or £billions on useless apps that don't work

Reality is they are held in a former army barracks that were abandoned years ago because even the army thought it wasn't fit for human habitation & its actually a grim situation they are in.

No one wants smuggling to go unabated.

Many of us are asking for respect for human life and the allowing of safe passage. That's not the same thing as giving the green light to smuggling. Indeed, it ends that evil trade

As noted about, circa 70% of applications (eventually) are deemed acceptable.

I just don't understand why people are blaming the UK government for this tragedy when the French police literally sat back and watched as a smuggling gang took these people out in the Channel in a raft.

Kids died and UK and French politicians are arguing about who was to blame. I'd say they both were. We have laws that allow migrants, once they get here to get support (financially and mentally), so why do we make it so damn difficult for people to get here. If we genuinely didn't want them, why not change the rules so people aren't risking their lives. Its like trying to get to the promised land, but then having to complete a labyrinth-esque quest in order to get there. Its just bloody stupid. People should not be dying just trying to get somewhere to make their lives better.

As Per Macron: Since the start of 2021, he said, 1,552 smugglers had been arrested in northern France and 44 smuggler networks dismantled.

I assume they are official figures.

It's a myth the French are sat on their backsides doing nowt.

France and the UK need to work together to facilitate safe passage. Unfortunately, that wouldn't suit our narrative of wanting to dehumanize these poor people.

Exactly. Just like the drugs trade you can't arrest your way out of the problem because the profits are so high that there is always someone else waiting in the wings to take over.

The French police are doing a good job under impossible circumstances.

Surely the screamingly obvious solution to prevent this catastrophe is to make the legal routes into the UK asylum system much easier to access?

Another key point is we need these people, we have a massive shortage of care workers, NHS staff, fruit pickers, factory workers, lorry drivers, hospitality workers, the list goes on.

So we have huge gaps in the workforce and people literally risking their lives to come and make a life and work in the UK?

I think I see obvious solution.

Is it reported anywhere that French police watched that particular boat sail out?

Doesn't suit the Tory narrative - and it would be a massive U Turn that would cost them votes. This is what you get for 10 years of hate against immigrants from the Tories and the Tory leaning rags.

It's an absolute disaster but short of sending ferries over then I'm not sure what we can do to get France to pull their fingers out.
Are we helping France to stop them getting in to France or is that their problem and nothing is our problem .
We are good at wagging our collective fingers at other nations .

It was disheartening to hear David Blunkett on the radio this morning lauding his success in closing down asylum routes when he was Home Secretary and saying we have to be tough on migration otherwise we'd end up with PM Farage.

Politicians seem to have given up being humane and now just want to pander to the lowest common denominator and tabloid headlines.

Surely it is for the countries they are passing through to support France with that?

Yes we should play a role but by no means a prime role.

As people like @Colin Warnek show though there is political capital to be gained by their inhumanity. Sad but true but some people are just so full of hate they'd rather argue political points than worry about people drowning.
