Multiple deaths in Channel dinghy accident

Don't fall for the Tory spin. There are many reasons but here are two big ones:

1. Language (they are more likely to speak English rather than French)
2. Family links already in the UK
And that is worth risking your life for not to mention the extortionate amounts involved

It was a genuine question. They are in France. France is safe and secure - why would you want to set sail in a rubber dinghy to get here?
Does this look safe and secure to you?

It is heart-breaking. we take our way of life for granted and poor people like these risk their very lives to come here.
If we don't already, why cant we have a permanent number of equipped boats patrolling the area? Between us and France surely we could intercept most of these people and get them to shore?

I don't think I will ever forget that picture of the boy washed up on a beach in Italy. Nor should I.

And since brexit we have blocked familes being reunited as was the case when in the EU, so these people become more desperate, one of the reasons boat crossings are up but asylum applications are down .

Can't be doing with the politics of it tonight. What a sad way to go, having undoubtedly already been through so much just for a small chance of security.

Heartbreaking.
Those poor desperate souls.
Who's to say if any of us were without hope we wouldn't attempt the same thing?

Might Brexit be partly to blame? Is it more likely that those that do make will get work because of the big shortage of low skilled workers and send that message home?

Have any of the gangs arranging these crossings ever been caught, imprisoned. Surely the authorities must know who they are or could find out with a bit of effort. Undoubtedly if caught there would only be some other unscrupulous criminal filling their shoes but it just feels like no one is attempting to close down these gangs. I appreciate this is only one part of an undoubtedly complex problem.

Those poor people are similar to the lives lost in the lorry a couple of years ago. Desperate people wanting to earn some decent money (by their standards) and look after their families.

For anyone who has watched the program on the police investigation into the lorry deaths. It's a complicated situation involving people from Vietnam paying criminal gangs money for transportation to a country they either have links to or can speak the language. They travel through other countries to get here.

This country cannot just stand back and blame France. Britain is a country with history of stomping through lots of other countries in days of Empire. It wasn't "migrants" then was it?

Here’s a thing, the right wing of you in here might be a bit uncomfortable doing this: change the word “migrant” to “human”.
Then see how you feel about the comments being made. About the discussions. Because that’s what we are talking about here: human lives. Think about that next time you post “but France is safe” “but people smugglers” and see if it changes you. It should

No and they never will. They are doing it under the noses of the authorities. The police stand by and watch them launch.

These poor people are simply pawns used in a game.

The Times, Telegraph, Mail, Sun, Johnson and Patel all create a myth to suit their narrative. They don't actually tell the whole story. France already grants asylum to twice the number of people (not migrants!) as Britain does. There is a reason why some people want to get to Britain - it's either language, family connections or historical ties. That is the same reason why some people want to settle in France.

Ask yourself this; if a person is willing to attempt a crossing of the English Channel during November in an inflatable dingy how desperate must they be? For anyone who has been at sea, that is pretty terrifying odds.
