Hong Kong Story

Starting to come out of lockdown now after 3 months pretty much. Restaurants open with social distancing. Beaches filling up. But very few new cases all traced back to airport arrivals who are then traced.
Everyone flying in goes into lockdown after going through heat scanners etc.
Offices, restaurants etc have heat scanners, you have to fill out forms where you have been etc. Hand gels that everyone uses entering any building. Everyone wears masks. Everything is organised to the point of even in lifts you don't press the normal button but a special disinfected control.
People feeling more confident again. They have accepted the new ways. But they were in lockdown far longer than us and were able to prepare thoroughly for afterwards.
They have only ever had 4 deaths. That is a city state with density of population if not the total population of London but it is next to (part of) China - it surely should be as high as London. We had weeks to learn something from them. We still can now.
They hospitalise anyone with the virus immediately. They always have. They do not wait. Has that made a difference?
More than that it makes me think we are in no way ready yet to come out of lockdown.

I don't think we're coming out of 'lockdown' anytime soon, but we are probably going to start allowing some very restricted movements that haven't been encouraged since March. We haven't had the same kind of lockdown as some other countries anyway.

Great point that Hong Kong should have a high a death toll as London, if not higher. The population is roughly the same, the population density is similar and I would imagine the amount of international travel is on a par (They get more sea traffic whereas we get more air traffic) why is there such a huge discrepancy in the deaths? Statistically speaking it's as if they haven't had it: 4 in 8 million isn't even worth plotting on a chart.

I know we haven't lockdown as hard as some countries (answering 1st reply) and that worries me. And will we have all the heat monitors and hand gels in every building etc?
I have got to be honest I think we should be thinking long and hard about how we celebrate VE Day next weekend.

Remember Hong Kong has a land border with China which it didn't close immediately and even then kept open for people travelling to work.

It's been a pretty half-hearted lockdown in the UK. People can just about come and go as they please and for those that can't work from home social distancing is pot luck. That's not to mention all the incoming flights.

On a separate note, isn't it about time we stopped celebrating WW2? Let's move on.

Bloomin CCP!

Maybe not when you lost close relatives to the nazis

It wasn't even on my radar. I thought the Bank Holiday was today until my boss told me on Friday gone that it was moved back to the Friday.

When was the decision made? Are they trying to instil the spirit of the Blitz in us to get us through? Cos as you say, it gives people a state sponsored reason to celebrate something that the people old enough to remember shouldn't really be celebrating very hard. You'd have to be 80+ to have any recollection of it. No reason we couldn't have just had a minute's silence or whatever.

It was made ages ago. I think it's a great idea, we need to remember the past or else we are doomed to repeat it
A fair proportion of the people who voted for Brexit did so because they hate the Germans, despite not living through either war. This sort of thing doesn't especially help in my view. Its the past, leave it there.

It's fine remembering, we do that every November, just can't see the need to celebrate victory again. And Im sure we all lost family, I certainly did. Not close family to me though because I wasn't born for another twenty years.

There are people on here less than half my age who have lost buddy`s on the front line in Iraq and Afghan, who have seen mates blown up and hit by shrapnel: they`ve buried mates and witnessed buildings full of women and kids blown to bits.

There are tens of millions whose tragic slaughter is told on the battlefields around the globe.
Not only in uniform, but innocent women, children, the old, the mentally ill, those who resisted tyranny, were hung, raped, slaughtered, tortured and starved to death.

In London, Southampton, Middlesbrough, Hull, Liverpool, Coventry and amongst other areas of Britain the civilian population were subject to violence anf terror from bombs and raids designed to paralyse Great Britain.

Merchant Seamen lost their lives in their thousands, keeping the life-line alive across the Atlantic against U-Boats and perilous conditions. They put what little there was on the table of those at home who were working flat out to build Spitfires, munitions, battleships and supplies up to 20 hours a day. Miners and the Bevan Boys crawled undergroung to dig out coal to keep the railway wheels turning and industry moving.

Without mentioning the tens of millions of Russians who fought back against the fascists and the terrible conditions in which many lost there lives.....

Out of carnage came peace, even though for some it was short-lived - out of that came an expectation that people deserved decent healthcare "From the Cradle to the Grave".
New houses with decent sanitation were built in their thousands.
It was time to rebuild.
Time to cast off austerity.

How anyone can dismiss those sacrifices by asking why we want to celebrate V.E day - makes me angry and sick at the same time.

Ask Captain Moore why he enlisted in the Army to serve his country?
Then ask him again why he walked round his garden and raised over 30 Million Pounds for our NHS in these unpresidented times.

To dismiss V.E and any other day is to dismiss all those who sacrificed their lives for their countries around the globe and the innocent victims of war who died in their millions.

You have a lot to think about!

It is the fact that you and I were born and have lived to tell the tell which tells you why we should NEVER forget and pay our eternal respect.

Say that to the lads on here, not yet in their mid-30s, who have mental health issues and suffer in silence when they relive the incidents when their mates were blown to bits, and think of the families.

Without acknowledging the past you cannot understand today and prevent happening tomorrow what happened yesterday!

And how exactly do you know that?

No one is saying we shouldn't acknowledge the past. But we don't need to have tea and cake with our neighbours.
