Emigrating

Germany or the US, L.A or Florida specifically
Florida is ok, but California generally and LA specifically is great. The sun shines almost all the time, there's a huge spectrum of people, and it's great to live there. All the beach communities from Long Beach to Oxnard are just fantastic places to be, maybe with the single exception of Venice.

Hope you're a millionaire.

LA is full of vvankers & phonies

Can't stand the place, I've travelled extensively throughout the states over many years, most of it ;s pretty bad but LA takes things to another level

Why emigrate in the first place?

If you're not happy where you are in the UK, ask yourself why exactly.

It's quite possible the place you're thinking of moving to has the same problems, or worse problems. Nowhere is perfect.

If anything, consider moving to a different region of the UK. I live in Oxfordshire and despite all the problems of this country I really can't think of anywhere I'd rather live (lucky me)
Yeah interesting point.

Some people get their happiness from setting down deep roots and stability, some people the opposite.

Me, I love the excitement and possibilities of the new, find it very energising.

Good post

I'm so happy where I live, as mentioned my family are in walking distance, everything I enjoy & love doing is on my doorstep, why would I want to uproot to a country when there is only the wife & I & talking to my family on zoom everyother day, no thanks, love my life where I am

If there is Utopia then I have it

i wouldnt live in the USA if everything was free & they were paying me.

i balk at visiting the place - the definitive capitalist babylon.

South West Ireland would be my destination of choice. but i'm very content where i am already.
Of the English speaking places I've spent a reasonable amount of time in I'd say either southern Spain or Ireland.

I liked Singapore but not for a long term stay, 3 months was about enough. Just under 5 years in USA but made easy because there was always an eye on leaving. A fortnight was more than enough in Oz

Come on then….it’s easy to knock somebody else’s dream but you’ve not told us where you would go? Or have you already emigrated?
Not been in UK for more than 15years

Its too cold
Im not knocking any persons dream.
Try a few places - you will soon find out if it suits or not.

Stupid little thing this and not exactly a reason to emigrate 😁 but I find it blissfully relaxing to be in a non-English speaking country where you can just tune out of the language if you’re hanging out in a cafe or on the train or whatever.

Don’t know why, maybe hell is other people like Kafka said, but it’s one of my favourite things in life to just sit and enjoy the music of life without being distracted by the ins and outs of what people are saying. Even chavs having a row in the street in Southern Italy is quite romantic when you can’t understand a word of what they’re saying!

@BernieisGod, India is an interesting one. Was always at the top of my list but reckon I’m too old and couldn’t handle the hassle and lack of creature comforts now. I don’t think it’s a place you can just visit, sounds too intense. I have massive respect for people who switch their lives off for a bit and really go there and live for nine months or so, and I reckon that’s the way to get the most out of the experience. My mates who’ve done that say it’s like nowhere else on earth, but you go through the full range of human emotions every single day, so frustrating and beautiful and just extreme in every way. Nothing is easy.

That deep connection to spirituality they have there would be an amazing thing to experience too, my girlfriend (who’s a massive hippy) went and described it as like a land before civilisation, which always stuck with me. Wish I’d gone when I was 25 and a bit more idealistic, now I’d just be wandering around trying to find a decent latte 😁

Like others have said, we’re very lucky to be able to pick and choose to see these places, but such is life. The world is a rich and amazing place, who wouldn’t want to experience as much of it as they can!

Where did you end up?
I’d like to do it but family and friends keep me here. I did a lot of travelling for 20 yrs + in my previous career and came across loads of places I thought ‘yeah. This will be a better life than I could ever have at home’. But then it would be the thought of not seeing friends and family that kept me from doing it.
Now I’d happily settle for returning to the North East, from the south.
The North East takes some beating really, because of the people.
