Give a Coat a Home - that's the call to help those in need keep warm as autumn and winter approach.

Used coats are currently being collected across Middlesbrough, before being handed out at a special event later this month.

The initiative is being led by Linthorpe ward Councillor Philippa Storey and Newport ward Councillor Chris Cooke who were inspired by a rise in online requests for help.

A one-off event on Saturday, September 25 will see the coats distributed to those calling in at the pop-up shop in the Carriage Driveway in the Town Hall.

They'll be available to anyone who needs one, with coats arranged in age groups.

Members of the public are invited to donate unwanted coats in good condition ahead of the even on September 25 to allow time for them to be sorted.

The donation points are:

  • Percy Middlesbrough (Commerce Way, off Skippers Lane) on Wednesdays between 10am and 3pm
  • Streets Ahead (Parliament Road) on Mondays from 10am till 6pm
  • The Kitchen Table - 2 Park Road South
  • Albert Park visitor centre
Councillor Philippa Storey said: "Many of us take for granted the ability to wrap up warm when temperatures start to fall, but not everyone is so lucky.

"We were inspired by a rise in the number of people asking for coats for children and adults, and wanted to do something to help.

"There must thousands for perfectly good, warm coats out there that are simply going unused, so Give a Coat a Home is a chance for those who might be struggling to pick up an excellent condition pre-loved coat for free."

A couple of winters ago I gave some clothes to the clothing bank behind the Hope Foundation in Middlesbrough - Socialist Clothing Bank - they have a shipping container full of clothes on long rails . And sadly every Monday there is a long queue.
When I passed the next week the people showed me the clothes rail stretching from the door to the back of the container and told me that it had been completely emptied within an hour.
And that was before COVID.

Excellent Rob, thanks for posting I will make sure our unwanted coats find a worthy home 👍

Great to meet you too and I would urge everyone to go to Spennymoor Town Hall and look at the fantastic Norman Cornish collection and then do the trail around the town. Really enjoyable afternoon. Am looking forward to going back for the mining museum collection, also in the Town Hall.
Wonderful for the community that they can use that building and enjoy it. Thanks so much Caretaker1
