Morsy: It Was Made Clear From Upstairs Boro Wanted to Sell Me [TWTD]

I can't see Warnock being overly happy with this new director of football model.

It will be interesting to see who the new gaffer could be.

warnock is short term now,we need to be looking at the bigger picture, which i feel we are starting to! im all for it.we deffo have a team caple of reaching the plays offs,i have no doubt, and if we are off the pace come xmas, ithink you will see the end of warnock, time will tell us of course, utb!!!!

Interesting read, seems the strategy is out of NM hands and he will be given a hand to play.... sorry to see him go, had a great attitude but numbers are numbers and I guess it was to balance the loanees coming in - which look very decent..

Interesting that it was not Warnock decision in any way. Those above decision?- Gibson, Bausor, new guy from Norwich who hadn't even started in the job? How does all the stuff about anti Vacc fit in? or was it irrelvant?

As I have said I was a Morsey fan and would have kept him in the squad. Games like Fulham away this season he battled and battled when on the pitch and helped keep them to 1 goal. Not many other teams will only concede only 1 goal or less at Fulham this season.

On the positive he liked going into training @ Boro and that should continue. His replacement is younger with Sam turning 30 soon. With a lot of competiton for his signature I expect we got all our money back on him.

He has said a lot of positives about the Boro fans too and he only played in 4 Boro games with unrestricted fans. His interviews for Ipswich media did not have to include this but he thought it was important. Good luck Sam you never know what might happen in the future.

I see the line "The 29-year-old says his switch wasn’t down to manager Neil Warnock: “Basically it was a decision from upstairs really, a decision over him." but ,for me, that stops short of saying NW had no involvement.

Scenario 1 is that SM was sold without any input from NW at all. I'd agree NW probably wouldn't be happy about this.

Scenario 2 is that NW is told someone has to go to balance the books, and asked to name a few players he could reluctantly do without, one of which is SM. This seems a more likely scenario than 1, and it can still fit with what SM says.

"I think when it became apparent I wouldn’t have a fair shot, that’s when I had to look elsewhere."

That definitely sounds like Warnock was involved in the decision, even if it wasn't his idea.

There is history at MFC of transfers bought and sold been done without the manager even known it has been agreed, that later asked to consent.

My guess would be we are going down the same route as Norwich and wanting very good footballers all over the pitch
It's much easier to get a good technical player to be fitter and stronger and faster, than to get a physical player to be more technical or a player with a poor attitude to be more technical.

Get players in with good ability, and a good attitude and then get good coaches to get them to play as a team and good sports scientists to strengthen their physical weak areas.

Really banking on Payero and JLS getting up to speed quickly. We don't have much wiggle room in CM for both to be 'well off the pace'.

Throw in Howsons legs and Tav injuries and we are still potentially short. We only really had 'one in and one out' . JLS maybe better (who knows) but we've not added numbers by moving Morsy on.

New midfielder Sam Morsy admits he had no expectation that he would be leaving Middlesbrough to move to Town on the final day of the transfer window and says Boro turned down loan interest from Championship clubs.

Morsy joined the Blues on a three-year deal a couple of hours before the deadline, the clubs having agreed an undisclosed six-figure fee.

“I had no intention of leaving Middlesbrough,” Morsy told the Hartlepool Mail.

“Even when I was told they were signing a midfielder [James Lea Siliki on loan from Rennes] I was happy to fight for my place but I think it was made clear from upstairs that they wanted to sell me.

“Initially I said that’s fine if the club wants to sell me but I said I’m staying put. I’d settled in the area, enjoyed my team-mates, enjoyed the coaching staff, it was a great atmosphere and I wanted to stay.

“I think when it became apparent I wouldn’t have a fair shot, that’s when I had to look elsewhere.

“It was late on the last day and I knew the manager [Paul Cook] at Ipswich and had told him earlier in the window there was no interest in leaving the club.

“Usually when I’m at a club I’m fully committed, fully committed to the cause and excited for the season.”

He says Boro were only on a long-term switch not a loan: “There were a couple of loans in the Championship to go to but the club wouldn’t accept a loan, only a permanent one.

“At that time Ipswich were the ones who offered a three-year deal. Going there I know the manager and know I’m going to enjoy my football, they have some really good players there and once we get going I think we can have a really good season.

“They have new owners and they’ve made 19 new signings, they’ll probably strengthen in January so I think it’s an exciting time for the club.”

The 29-year-old says his switch wasn’t down to manager Neil Warnock: “Basically it was a decision from upstairs really, a decision over him.

“There is a lot of transition going on at the club at the minute, a new director of football and lots of change really.

“I was the first casualty of the regime really. I spoke to all the coaching staff and had a really good relationship and really enjoyed working with them, good honest guys.

“Obviously I was only at the club for a year and had some really good bonds and loved my time there.”

He says he had good relationships with everybody at the Riverside: “I pretty much spoke to everyone at the club really and will stay in touch but it’s quite sad to be going to be honest.

"There had been nothing to suggest I would be leaving, it was just so out of the blue and I was just purely in a place of enjoying my football and enjoying coming to work everyday.

“It was sad really but this is football and it’s a cutthroat industry. I just have to immerse myself into this squad and this football club and hopefully have a successful season.”

He added: “I had some great memories there and met some great people, it was just a great atmosphere.

“I think there are not a lot of times when you go and you are genuinely buzzing for training, the games and we had that at Middlesbrough. It was a great atmosphere and something I’ll miss.”

The Egyptian international knows the target for the season with the Blues: "The manager has been really successful, I know some of the lads and I think once we get going we are going to be hard to stop. Without a doubt promotion is what we are after.”
Like he said it’s a cut throat business, but if the decision did come from upstairs, then obviously they could see what some of us could see. Good luck to him, but didn’t do it for me.

Don't forget Crooks and Malley, then you've got McNair and baby Dijksteel as 8th choice

This one decision may have ruined our season, with no one a natural fit to play the holding midfield role, no bite in midfield....
We shall see....

Something doesn't add up here and of course we only have one side of the story. I find it hard to believe we've moved him on for financial reasons. He cost peanuts, we got peanuts back (presumably) and I doubt he was on a big contract. If he was is he taking a big pay cut to drop down a league? Seems unlikely.

he also implies it was made clear to him he wasn't going to get a chance, but the decision to sell wasn't Warnock's. Regardless of what's going on behind the scenes re: recruitment there's no chance Warnock doesn't pick the team. So that doesn't make sense either. There's been no falling out and sounds like he's a good character and got a good attitude.

If everything he says is true (and it might not be, or the club or manager haven't been entirely honest with him) the only thing that would make sense is that he's being forced out for non footballing reasons.

If the rumours that he's strongly anti-vax and has influenced other players in not getting vaccinated are true, then that would make sense. If they are true (and I have no idea) then it's very believable that the club hierarchy would be furious about it (putting multi million pound assets at risk etc) but wouldn't be able to come out and say that's why they're getting rid given how sensitive a topic it is.

Feels like the most likely explanation unless Warnock really doesn't want him, but he'd be honest about it if that was the case. Be interesting to see if NW has anything to say on it.
