NHS recieve 3% payrise

Good news, better than what the government proposed, at the time all the ministers where on message saying it was all that could be afforded, bit of a backlash and now they accept this proposal, just seems like part of the pattern.

I think it would be nice if frontline NHS staff were also offered a £1000 bonus in addition as recognition of their efforts, I'm sure captain Tom would have been happy to see some of his money raised used in that way.

This, I couldn't agree more corco

It will be interesting to see what IPSA recommend for MP’s next year if it’s more than me as a frontline public service worker I will not be happy.

I’m glad the NHS staff getting a reasonable pay rise this year. The government know politically they couldn’t pay 1% again.

Borrowing to invest in essential services, social care and the wages of those providing it is a good idea. As is taxing those very high earners, be they companies or individuals, proportionately.
Borrowing and then funneling the money into the offshore bank accounts of your mates and charlatans is a bad thing.
With one option you'd be boosting the economy as people would be spending money, with the other you're moving money out of the economy and missing out on tax revenue.
Make your own mind up which one this pack of thieving b***ds decided would deem to be the best option.

That would be great, however, I read only yesterday about the nurse who was given £500 bonus as a thank you by the government only for it to be clawed back from her Universal Credit as it took her over the amount she was allowed to earn, leaving her unable to afford to pay her bills and struggling to buy food.
The fact that anybody is on UB when working full time in any job is a disgrace anyway.

All of the public sector are long overdue a pay rise. No problem with the NHS being front of the queue mind.

while frontline NHS are more deserving than anyone, spare a thought for civil servants, many who have also had to work long hours in frontline roles during the pandemic.

The NHS and local government have always at least had contractual pay progression, even during the pay freeze. The civil service haven't even had that. Which means if you're a civil servant who was at the bottom of the pay scale 5,6,7 years ago, chances are you're still there now. Facing yet another pay freeze. And the likes of Cummings wonder why they struggle to attract and retain the best and brightest.

If the bonus was clawed back wouldn’t that have simply left her with her usual wage and UC amount?

This 👍👍

referring to this offer as paltry, appalling and shambolic when the above staff have had nothing doesn’t really look great to me.

Does an admin clerk in the NHS anymore at danger than a civil servant travelling on public transport each day? To me no

I can't recall what Johnson promised in his 2019 manifesto but the pay rise should be at least that.

Comparing other services, whilst still deserving of a pay rise, isn't really comparing apples and apples. Over 1500 front line care workers died from covid during the pandemic, mostly at the hands of Hancock and his vip lane for ppe.

They deserve more than 3% in my opinion.

No. It was explained in the article. It was something on the lines of the bonus was counted as her wage which took her over the amount she was allowed to earn so she then owed the DWP money which was taken from the following three/four? months UC leaving her with only her wage which she cannot live off.

Yes that is a difficult situation. People in that or similar positions could perhaps be offered some form of shopping vouchers or even paid it as a gift, which should be treated as capital and not income. If there is a will there is a way.

I understand that but 3% isn't a small amount
It's not an amount, it's a percentage.

3% of a million is large amount.

3% of nothing isn't.

There is no getting away from the fact we can’t keep on borrowing ad infinitum
Why?

What is stopping us from borrowing?

If we were struggling as a nation we'd have started taxing the super-rich. The very fact we haven't needed to is proof our coffers are very healthy, thank you very much.

Ad Infinitum, who pays the repayments read my post again. The rich will not keep paying more and more the burden hits the poor harder if they walk away. You keep borrowing yourself and see where it gets you.
