Did we go up a year too late under karanka

What are your thoughts on Guti as manager? Loved him as a player . I’m a Barca man but he was one of my favourite Madrid players, thought he was a bit under rated
I think it is too early to say. According to Wiki he has had 5 years as a youth coach at Real Madrid. Then a year as an assistant at Beşiktaş. So I think he is still growing in to the job. Not sure if he will be allowed the time to grow though.

The sheikh originally said he wanted to be in La Liga within 3 years. After a good start to the season he said he was pushing to go up this season if possible. Hence trying to bypass FFP rules in the January window.

Perhaps Karanka has learned from mistakes he has made. You never know.....

Suppose Karanka has got previous of getting a team over the line which could go in his favour. But it does seem harsh to sack a manager who is 2nd in the league. Are you hoping he gets the chop and brings in AK?

I honestly do not know what I really want. I would love to see Guti succeed and get us to La Liga. However the last manager was sacked to bring in Guti when they were also second in the league.

To some degree there would probably be some management continuity as the sheikh has a sports director running things here for him. Google translated from Wiki in Spanish - "Mohamed El Assy (Cairo, Egypt, 1983) is an expert Sports Director in economics and finance who currently serves as General Director and Sports Director of the U.D. Almeria of Spain. "

I think that quotation is exactly why we were in big trouble regardless. It's divisive and doesn't provide any unity a manager should provide. The squad of players had said there was no unity in the squad. Karanka was out of his depth.

Karanka should've been moved on after he deserted the squad prior to Charlton.
I don't agree about sacking him after Charlton, but I do agree that those comments helped lead to our downfall. If you can't get the players you ask for you still have to soldier on with what you've got and manage them appropriately. Trying to throw everyone else under the bus so it looks like you're nothing to do with it never washed with me and brought a sad end to what was easily our most enjoyable three years since McClaren left.

I am gonna keep an eye out on results for the rest of the season, I normally include Almería in my acca and they have done me quite well this season haha . Genuinely hope you get promoted, you never know. This time in few months we could be talking about Karanka having another promotion on his CV. It’s a funny old game

As I mentioned above. Maybe Karanka has leaned from what happened here.

The way we played last Sunday there would be no chance of us going up. There was some suggestions that Guti set up the team wrong. Or that they were complacent as they thought they would get a win against the team at the bottom of the league.

I agree with every word he said, one of the things I loved about him was that he said what he meant. Rarely hid behind cliches.
“Some players think they’re better than they are” - next week Carayol was dropped, was that divisive? He called players out, the media and fans, I pretty much agreed with him and believed him every time.
Sadly I can’t say I now have much trust or faith in Gibson, from wanting to “smash the league”, and at the Woody unveiling, spitting his dummy out saying we have a history of backing every manager don’t we, when questioned would Woodgate have money to spend? Well he hasn’t has he?
We are where we are because of Gibson, not because Karanka was a year late in getting us promoted.

You've exemplified my point above about how our fans now seem to be split between the Karanka camp and the Gibson camp. Not 100%, but a very large proportion either 'love Karanka/tired of Gibson' or 'love Gibson/bitter about Karanka'.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. At the time i think most people wanted Karanka to return, stay and finish the job. Would we have achieved promotion regardless? The squad seem to think we would have. Did the toxic atmosphere continue in to the Premier League season? Almost certainly. Stuck between a rock and a hard place really but in hindsight, we might have made more progress had we made the right appointment replacing Karanka at that time.

Didn't really do wonders for his management of the squad though did it?

I’d agree with that. I also believe that Gibson has been overly protected by blind support for too many years as well. People will say he’s deserved that because of ‘86 but I also remember Henry Moszkowicz.

I’d have kept him on still, would’ve done better than Agnew and if we had gone down, we could’ve rebuilt like Burnley and Dyche did. Bringing in Agnew was like Turkeys voting for Christmas.

Agnew was the wrong appointment. I don’t think anyone would disagree with that. The difference between Karanka and Dyche is that Dyche fostered a togetherness in his squad that matured and developed when they went down. Karanka had allowed and (often encouraged) a divisive culture to grow. The squad Karanka put together in the Premier League would’ve been town apart and he’d have been left with a lot of the players he’d originally left behind. Who would want to give 100% for a manager that had done that to them?

Who has he left behind? You know he’d have had the summer transfer window right? How much did Monk pee up a wall?

Dimi, Ayala, Nsue, Leadbitter and Adomah all deserved the chance to play for us in the Premier League. I'd go as far as to say Rhodes deserved more chances as well, especially as Negredo went on a long run without scoring at one point.

There's a start.

Karanka would've been on the back foot trying to reconcile a divided dressing room he'd helped create. Getting rid of Karanka was abolsutely the right thing to do, unfortunately for us Monk wasn't the right person to bring in.

Don’t agree with Dimi, thanks for great job but see you later, Nsue was turned inside out in the few games he played, I was surprised that happened, so can see why he was let go. Grant is a tough one, we now know he often played injured and through injections. Adomah was always flirting for a move, I’d have tried to have kept him though.
