Should Boro Bid Again To Be A City?

The last cities awarded include Newport. Have you ever been to Newport?
As for other cities? Stoke anyone six town federation and half the size of Teesside?
Wolverhampton, Preston?

Rob is not saying we are pitching for Best City, just for it to attain city status.
Middlesbrough is easily the biggest of the Teesside towns and is the only one known outside the area.
The majority of "Stockton's" population is south of the river and no more Stockton than my ****.
It is classic "Teesside' that the only place big enough to have a national name is held back by those other towns opposing.
I suspect "nortonexile" is just such an example.

As for Darlington being the figurehead of the Tees Valley, that is a joke right?
I believe the catalytic impact of city status would be considerable for Middlesbrough and for the Tees Valley.

Sir I offer Sunderland to be added to that distinguished list of Newport , Preston etc

I suspect many more people down South are now more familiar with Darlington than Middlesbrough than previously due to recent events.

Should Middlesbrough apply for City status? - of course if it can get more funding to improve the area but don't ever think Middlesbrough is a "city" in the way Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester etc are.

I dread to think how much of the money the clown Andy Preston would waste if we were to achieve funding. Our track record over recent years in tackling any of the issues Middlesbrough faces has been dreadful - the first spend should be to appoint a professional with a proven track record who knows what to do.

Middlesbrough has just successfully hosted 2 England games in a week - the training ground is at Hurworth but what did the national news networks all say - they said Middlesbrough hosted the squad and games because it is Middlesbrough FC training HQ.
By all accounts the FA and England party were really impressed with the entire set-up don't be surprised if we see a repeat sometime in the future. How many other cities/towns outside London have hosted 2 England games in a week before?
Now Scotland are using the training camp. Cook Islands will later in the year be based at Rockcliffe before a Rugby League World Cup game at the Riverside - Riverside a city standard football stadium and venue.
The idea surely is the whole Tees Valley region works together on this and reaps the benefits together, just as the training ground at Hurworth dovetails with the Riverside at Middlesbrough. The new Globe at Stockton and Arc will work to serve the whole area as will the Hippodrome at Darlington and the revamped Middlesbrough Town Hall and yes we need transport infrastructure - but that is partly what Mayor Houchen is paid for.
We do have a lot of plus points - a city standard Sports Village, a fantastic facility used by public and schools throughout the region.
A university with a campus feel central hub and two regional college hubs in Middlesbrough College and the new Northern School of Art.
Two iconic bridges and a Grade One listed building in Acklam Hall.
But we also have loads and loads of brilliant people that work hard for the community, many in voluntary capacity and just try and make things a little better for those around them. It is great to be a small town that strives to punch above its weight but would also be great reward for all those tireless community workers to get the recognition and status of being heralded a city.

There`s always, always, always, been an elliment of self - demeaning pessimism - [a kind of "I`l say it before you do"] attitude in the Boro.
Almost a kind of negative self - appraisal and low expectations, to protect the population from broken promises.
Instead of knocking, the dirty old, socially deprived, run down, Championship - level - football - club, town :(;)(y))...................stick your heads up and contribute to the change which is already taking place.
We`ve all seen the depths - but once you`ve hit rock bottom - the only way is up.
Unfortunately, the concept of "Northern Powerhouse" is bullship designed to baffle brains.
London UK looks after itself, so none of us can wait for them to climb out of their bubble.

Having been to Chelmsford, Middlesbrough seems to have more going for it. Same goes for Newport.

How does the application cover the surrounding area, which is four times larger than the town itself?

Which change is that that's taking place Roofie?

I don't see any changes when I walk round town, I still have to fight my way into town via car because the transport system is useless.

None of the things Rob keeps banging on about that will change our town are happening.

Yes we have an extended train platform but there's no Historic quarter, otb is still a wasteland.

None of our assets @rob_fmttm refers to have been utilised. We have two historic bridges that a visitor couldn't do anything with other than look at from the floor from a distance.

One of the main routes into town is about to be converted into a cycle lane..............

A Grade 1 Building that people can't visit inside unless they book a meal in an over priced restaurant or book an office for the day. View of said building is about to be blighted by an awful hotel development to be built in the grounds along side.

Visit our iconic football stadium and marvel at a piece of art surrounded by wasteland that we were repeatedly promised would be developed into all sorts of wonderful things.

A University that has improved the town how? How many local jobs/businesses (other than a million takeaways) have been started & developed on Teesside as a result of the Uni?

It might not seem like it but I love my town. But it depresses me to see people, not matter how well meaning, trying to dress it up as something it isn't.

So are you suggesting a Tees Valley bid rather than a stand alone Middlesbrough bid?

Maybe the whole conurbation of Teesside should apply. Though whether Middlesbrough Stockton and Redcar councils would be prepared to work together I don't know

Stockton is the historic centre of Teesside. It's been around longer, it has a larger population, it has more history and culture. I won't be supporting a Middlesbrough City bid but i would support a Stockton City bid.

Teesside as a whole cannot apply to become a city as it is served by more than one council. To establish Teesside as a city would first involve amalgamating the area's councils into one.

Redcar and Cleveland would be an interesting application with Town, port, chemical site, coastline and moors.

How? It's invitation only seemingly.

The link provided in the original post was simply a yes or no option as to whether you support Middlesbrough entering the competition to bid. (25 responses so far)

Entry Guidelines No 3

Applications may only be made by an elected local authority for its entire area or a distinct area within its boundary.

Yarm has been around longer than Stockton. Guisborough or Gisborough is the historic capital of Cleveland.
Middlesbrough has Teesside University, the Riverside Stadium and Sports Village and one of the biggest hospitals in the country.
But Middlesbrough could easily be a city working with Stockton and all the other towns in the area - that is how the last city bid was put together working with the other councils before and the promise of doing so afterwards.

Working on - Entry Guidelines No 3 - Applications may only be made by an elected local authority for its entire area or a distinct area within its boundary.

Then a Middlesbrough City Bid would only cover the Unitary area of Middlesbrough as shown in the pic attached - is that right?

This is not just about a vote whether or not to be a "City".
You highlight a number of issues and area which concern you.
Find out how you can become involved - become active - contact Campaign for Sustainable Transport [for example]- find out what you can do.
Contact your local Councillor and say "I want to make a difference"...or your MP.
Find out who`s involved in planning and implementation.
Are there local groups involved - such as charities which represent the Physically and Mentally "disabled".
Be imaginative.
Its a minefield - but thats democracy - it needs kicking.
Dont stand at the back - it gets none of us anywhere.
Ask the Suffragettes (y) ;)
