Name your top family day out within 1hour of Teesside.

Some great suggestions so far. I am also going to take them to the lakes.

We have a dog so we will have a walk on north and south beach and different days also.

Brimham Rocks & Knaresborough. Gibside, Rievaulx Abbey, Cragside, Holy Island, Dunstanburgh Castle and surrounding beaches. Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay. York and on way back detour and pop into the Lion Inn at blakey. Some over the 1hr travel mark 🤕

Ps can't beat the lakes 👍👍

Rosedale Abbey, Hole of Horcum, Sutton Bank, Helmsley, Rievaulx, Grosmont and then walk the old line to Beck Hole, Aysgarth Falls (croc free as an added bonus for the Aussies), Robin Hoods Bay, Captain Cooks Monument, railway museum at Shildon.

Living in Knaresborough i didnt realise just how tourist central the place is on a weekend and school holidays. Its got a nice river and some castle ruins but give me the coast any day of the week

Was in Pooley Bridge on Saturday, lovely walk along the lake to Howtown and back. Followed by a really nice lunch in the Hidden Garden (go through and out the back of the shop next to the Crown) the whole place is much more up market than it was. Drive through the village and left after the Sun Inn you can park for 4 quid all day.

I have family coming over for a wedding from Australia who have never been to Teesside before in the summer.

Trying to recommend a few days out for them. I visited Helmsley at the weekend and Yorkshire lavender.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway starts operating steam trains again May 15th, see website for details

Depends on their ages and a bit about their interests.

Younger children Flamingo Land is a safe choice

Whitby usually have something for everyone, but go mid week in the Summer because it so busy.

If they are fit and like walking and fresh air - Cleveland Way say Bus to Loftus then walk to Whitby then train back to Teesside - Walking and fresh air might be better in Covid times.

Roseberry Topping of course with lunch in a local pub

Dales Centre Danby then drive over the Moors for walk around Rosedale following old railway line and pint at Blakey Ridge

Boro match (if non season ticket holders allowed in)

NYMR - Grosmont to Goathland and walk back.

Barnard Castle and High Force (if interested in Art must go to Bowes Museum)

Durham Cathedral

York Centre (can't do everything have to pick what interests) use park and ride

Saltburn - if it buckets and spades and fish and chips and less stress and cheaper than Whitby.

Transporter Bridge

Rowntree Park is nice by the river in York, it's not that far from the centre. a bit further afield Otley and Ilkley also have nice river walks

For a family day out South Shields .. nice beach and park on the seafront, amusement park with rides, Colmans Fish & Chips, pier you can walk along

I love this forum a great reference point.

I like Rob’s local history link also.

A few big days are planned out like Edinburgh and York on the train.

I am also going to take them to the spa at Harrogate and Lincoln for days out also.

Hopefully Captain Cook Museum will be open in the summer.

The Captain Cook Museum in Whitby reopens on the 17th. The northyorkmoors.org Captain Cook page has links, guides, maps to all the Cook related stuff if they're interested in that sort of thing. There's a downloadable guide that is set out like a treasure hunt which might make it more enjoyable for the kids.

I don't think that you can go wrong no matter where you choose to take them.

As much as my Australian born wife loved pretty much all that has already been mentioned, it was the little things
that she talked about after we got back to Oz.

The different colours of the fields, stone walls, country lanes, old stone pubs and the low ceilings and huge fireplaces
and all it's history.
Small local museums, antique and book shops, churches and old graveyards, visiting the Bronte house and just driving
and wandering around at leisure were the highlights for her and so much different to her homeland.

This is why " You can't go wrong. It is so much different "

Good luck with it all and would like to hear how it all went after their visit.
