Bizarre management?

“I didn’t want to waste his time.”

This is what Warnock said when asked why Akpom wasn’t involved. He said he was only going to bring one striker on and it would be Coburn, so Akpom travelling would be wasting his time and he’d “probably be quite happy” he could stay at home.

The club are paying Akpom’s wages. Should they be asking why they are paying for players to sit on their arses while their teammates are off playing games? Or why we are leaving fit, senior players out when we can’t fill a bench?

I don’t understand this style of management, I have to be honest. It is weird.

I think it's obvious Akpom will be moved on this summer, which will probably be at a significant loss, given the circumstances.

It's a risky style of management and you have to be sure the rest of the squad are comfortable with singling players our like this.

Mourinho has the same approach, which ultimately caused issued at Man Utd and Spurs.

I found it odd I have to say.
I mean, how could you know 2 days before a game that you wouldn't need to or want to make a certain substitution?

The game was a dead rubber so maybe he did only want to look at the youngsters if the opportunity arose. Warnock was criticised for not giving them a chance earlier and now his management is getting questioned again....?
That’s experts for you

So what Nobby, Wilf and El Guapo are saying, as I understand it, is that it's good management to play without a specialist centre forward, with only an 18 year old forward on the bench, and leave your only senior forward at home despite having a free space on the bench?

Can't say I agree with that analysis. What if Watmore and Coburn picked up knocks? I know the game's a dead rubber but you've still got to try and win.

Also implying that people are unhappy with a manager who "says it as he sees it" is a bit odd. Surely that's the opposite of what Warnock's done here. If he said it as he sees it he'd have said "I've left him home because I'm sick of him and I'm trying to sell him".

We had two spare places on the bench. EFL teams are allowed to use 5 out of 9 subs. We had 7.

It was a bizarre explanation from NW if nothing else.

Warnock had Watmore Bolasie and Coburn who can all play up top. Chances of them all getting injured in the same game are pretty remote don't you think ?

This the same Akpom that was our number one target in the summer, who we spent the majority of the transfer budget on? Clearly not going to be able to move him on, so will be stuck with him for next season. Yet he wont even travel with the squad but we will use loan players who will be returning to their clubs in the summer for a game that means nothing.

Think some pub sides will be run with more professionalism than we are.

Just for the record I don't rate Akpom at all, according to wiki he's scored 5 in 36 for us and when be was at Hull 3 in 36.
I reckon I could score 5 goals in 36 games if I hung around the penalty box, which is effectively what Akpom does. His movement is poor, he's not aggressive enough, no threat in the air and his first touch is just OK. I would sell him if we could...
