Social Media Boycott this weekend

I've been getting messages from different sources regarding the social media boycott this weekend to combat online abuse and discrimination - does anyone think this will work or is it more to highlight the fact to people who run these sites?

Something needs to happen to stop the abuse perpetrated on these sites.

We are more or less a good bunch on here and tend to regulate our own but, you only have to disagree with someone's politics, religion, etc. and you endure their wrath on threads.

Does this site count as social media too? Are we all doing it or just if you're famous? I'm not sure anyone would notice my absence :ROFLMAO:

It won't work. It's nice they're doing something, but it's still not enough.

The main social platforms certainly should be doing a lot more. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok etc all should be taking a lot more responsibility over the matter and having a duty of care...but they know their revenue will take a hit if they go down that road and all they give a **** about is $$.

As long as they're raking it in, they'll continue to turn a blind eye and not give a to$$.

The same goes for the authorities and players though. Even the players daren't take a few months off and risk damage to their own profile/brand. If there was a 3 month boycott by every Premier League player that might have an impact, but it won't happen.

I think Boro are massively on board because they have seen that once twitter and instagram do pull their fingers out then they stop the racism. Yannick Bolasie's social media racist attacker was stopped in his tracks - the guy immediately banned and the police have prosecuted.
This shows a clear path. It can work when they want it to work. I can ban people and block people on this forum for racism so why can't facebook/twitter/instagram?
This weekend can fix their minds on taking this seriously. They can do it as we saw with Bolasie.
I have seen incidents with fans being racially abused where you report it and nothing happens from the twitter/instagram ends - the racists are openly racist on their profiles. So, why are they are not being stopped from posting and even when reported.
It will focus everyone's minds on how these racist trolls can be stopped in their tracks.

Twitter/instagram can fix much of the problem immediately if they want to - this short, sharp demonstration should force them to react.

I think it will absolutely have an impact, it'll put heavy pressure on the social media platforms if the boycott is followed properly.

It'll be old school having to wait for BBC Tees to announce the team news on Saturday.

For one weekend? I really don’t see it having any impact. Time will tell I guess.

Like they say .....".One man's terrorist ,is another man's freedom fighter". Personally by monday the boycott will be forgotten about when they all start posting again & saying how they all did so well !!!!

We can be cynical but are we all serious about wanting to stop racists and drive them off social media and drive them out of society?
This is a little direct action we can all do that could have a very big outcome.
We were all horrified when one of our fans was abused online. We were then disgusted when Bolasie was racially abused. At least I hope everyone was. That was certainly the way it came across on the message board.
So, as fans and players we have been victim of these attackers, so why not make a stand and a statement this weekend and try and force some action.
This gesture will be watched and reported on and it could be really effective because lets face it social media has the tools to do tackle the racists - they are very quick to use these tools to bolster their own financial returns. If everyone bands together in one weekend they will have to make a reply and hopefully start to take some social responsibility. If one racist gets shut down because of this weekend of (in)action and one potential troll has second thoughts then it will have had some success. If twitter decide to better police their platform, as they could do, then what a victory that would be.
Got to be worth a try.

Does that mean the Boro wont be putting Teams up on Twitter on Saturday. That's the only football thing I look at on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok etc. Does this site count or Newsnow. Genuinely don't know. Don't follow any footballers and never had an inkling to do so.

I just think it’s an extremely weak negotiation strategy Rob. Radical results require radical measures. However you look at it, laying off Twitter for one weekend isn’t radical in the slightest, hence unlikely to be met with a radical response. I’ve no doubt at all Twitter/Facebook will pay some lip service to the cause, to get them off their back for a few more years.
