Hartlepool by-election

Tory woman lived as a tax exile apparently, no real crime but the tory repose , Williams spent time as a volunteer in Uganda which in their eyes is just as bad 😁

On all counts Labour should win Hartlepool. Its a very working class seat, with above average social deprivation, below average incomes. BREXIT has been implemented (which was a major issue at the last election in BREXIT voting areas). The Labour candidate is more connected with the local area and seems a very decent bloke.

I was surprised to see the Conservatives are favourites in the betting markets. Anyone live in the Hartlepool area, whats the feeling on the ground? For example the former UKIP voters will they vote Tory. The betting markets say they will nearly all vote Tory.

If Labour lose Hartlepool they must address how they are going to level up the UK outside the metropolitan cities.

Look at the social media sites hes still getting hammered for his stance on brexit.
That's why the Tories will win - Brexit was sold on anti immigration, and that is a popular theme there
Tories 'got Brexit done' - and that ÂŁ350m a week given to the NHS instead of Johnny Foreigner is working a treat

I'm glad I've spent a lot of time with a lot of Hartlepool people over the years and I'm very fond of the place. Otherwise I think I would have formed the opinion that the place must be full of appalling characters.

I knocked on doors for Williams at the last election in Stockton South and still talk to people who have volunteered for him again.

Messaged one of them last week, and this was her take -

"If it wasn’t for Paul I don’t think I’d be campaigning this time around. The negative responses we do get can be put into two categories -

1 - We voted to leave. Labour didn’t listen to us and tried to overturn the result. Paul is a Remainer who’s constituents kicked him out because he wouldn’t respect the result. Why should we trust Labour?

2 - Labour did very little for the town in 76 years as a Labour safe seat, so we want a change. We like what Ben Houchen is doing for the area. We don’t know what Starmer stands for.

Annoyingly many of these are ex Labour voters

It’s embarrassing when someone asks you about Labour policies, I just find myself taking the conversation quickly back to Paul as the local candidate and his background as an NHS doctor and the amazing work he’s done with autistic children.

He is the best candidate. The Conservative candidate isn’t a patch on him. But it’s difficult when you’re trying to make an argument as to why former Labour voters should come back to us after years of them feeling Labour politicians have taken them for granted whilst at the same time BJ is up here quite a bit publicising the Freeport, Sunak is visible as his constituency is here, Houchen is all over Facebook with his questionably funded PR team telling everyone how great he is. All this is going on and KS doesn’t seem to be adding anything"

Opposition Leadership?!
My empathy with all the foot soldiers doing all they can with a leader who`s more blue than red.
People want hope and direction.
Not flags.
If Labour do get back in Hartlepool, the people of Hartlepool have the right to answers and to campaign.
Dont let Labour slip back into taking voters and the community for granted.
Keep going.

Give it up as a bad job if there is nothing to campaign on, I’ve just been reading Tory rag web sites all day talking about sleaze, where Johnson gets all his money from and whether or not he was prepared to pile bodies up to avoid a third lockdown. And these are Tory rags.

Do you think for a minute if a Labour PM was presiding over this shambles that Tories would be on the doorstep arguing about policy?

We have the most incompetent, bent, public school loving buffoon ever seen in Downing Street and you can’t get stuck in? Starmer is the sensible and honest contrast in every way.

Everybody knows what Labour stands for - strong NHS, fairer distribution of wealth, fair wages, youth opportunities, good state education...you don’t need a policy document to point all that out. Labour has loads of achievements when in power, it’s not a difficult sell.

If Hartlepool want crooks in charge then let them vote for them.

My advice to Labour would be concentrate more on education, social services and regional support. NHS - people know Labour would support it more the Tories so less need to stress this.

17% of young people in Hartlepool complete higher vocational qualifications, compared with only 3% nationally. Many use Further Education College which has been hammered under the Tories, particularly under Cameron. The Tories come from a school A level to University background. State schools too have lost funding and so funding per pupil has dropped to pay for increased tax subsidies for better off people such as pension relief for 40% tax band, stamp duty relief on ÂŁ500k homes.

Regional support - Labour needs to be specific what special benefits is it giving for businesses to locate to towns like Hartlepool or stay in Hartlepool. The area has lost lots of manufacturing jobs in both Labour and Conservative years, what is Labour going to do to change that. I don't know what their policies are, but they may be specifics that can be brought out. My idea would be to have lower taxes in economically depressed/left behind areas as happens in the USA. Also infrastructure spending needs to balanced up - a lot of spending has been directed at cities particularly in London, Birmingham and Manchester with projects such as Crossrail and HS2 - Labour needs to show how they would spend in areas away from the major cities.

Social services - Many retired people are voting Conservative in left behind areas, like Hartlepool. They think they OK because their pensions are going up 2.5% every year and many cases their paid for properties, but when they need paid for care the cost is shooting up and most in England have to pay and they will have to pay more in the future as every day more pressure is put on social services with the same money. Its ok for someone with a large pension or someone that has everything paid
for, but many in Hartlepool will be in between. Social services are mainly funded by local government that is receiving less and less financial support from central taxation. Local services are provided by local government and Labour need to get across they support Local government.

For BREXIT - Labour has to fully support the EU referendum vote, but encourage co-operation between the UK and the EU say by removing non tariff barriers on goods and services. They should be more trusted in the EU.

It is difficult to talk about sleaze when you are walking around with Peter Mandelson though.

I don't think she was saying she gets asked about policy all the time. Lets say for argument sake one in four doors you know on ask "what policies do you have, how will you make things better for us in Hartlepool 76 years of voting Labour" how do you go about answering that?

NHS - they have not come out with a policy to roll back privatisation. Their only commitment so far is to give NHS workers 1% more pay than the 1% the Tories have offered.

Fair distribution of wealth - Starmer was against rising corporation tax

Fair wages - They refused to back NHS worker's demands for a pay rise

Youth opportunities - Labour previously supported austerity which slashed youth services

Good state education - Starmer refused to back teachers on COVID

Having empty words or just saying "fair distribution of wages" is not enough, you need to be able to tell people how you are going to do it.

Labour at the moment simply cannot. Starmer might be the sensible choice but that does not make people want to go out and vote for him. He needs to give them more reasons.

Sad. Very sad. “Why should we trust Labour?”. So they are going to continue to vote for the party who least represent and support their real interests with a cabinet full of incompetent liars and charlatans.

You not think those years of electing a Labour government didn't help to make the lives of the working classes better?
Put on the table what Labour have achieved in their years of power compared to the tories, its a no brainer.
Problem is the torieshave convinced enough people that their plight is nothing to do with the tories and nstead the fault of those on benefits, imigrants and the EU

That's why the Tories will win - Brexit was sold on anti immigration, and that is a popular theme there
Tories 'got Brexit done' - and that ÂŁ350m a week given to the NHS instead of Johnny Foreigner is working a treat
That's horrific though isn't it? If people will STILL vote someone in based soley on brexit? Given how bad it is?

It's honestly depressing that there are still brexiteers in this coutnry. Let alone enough of them to ignore all forms of corruption and incompetence to vote for a political candidate. I honestly think there's something not right with the majority of Brexiteers. I don't know what it is but it seems ludicrous to belive in this ridiculous cult. Now, when it's destroying the country. I don't get it
