Feedback on new site thread

Evidence of threads "going missing". I think you have some sort of bug (or some strange user error by me that I do not understand).

I mentioned before that the Benidorm/Spain Lock Down thread does not refresh back to the top of the threads list on my front page.

I have just found another thread with the same bug. The paint thread.

I can get to the threads via a search so I can still find them.

Here are the symptoms:

They are missing from my forum "front page" when someone updates the thread. However it is there (temporarily) as the latest thread in the forum list (one level up in the menu hierarchy). Strangely it is missing in the latest posts list on the same page.

Maybe this a more general problem? Or maybe it is user error? Who knows?

Here are a couple of screen dumps showing the problem.

Some good news for you. Further to my earlier bug report. My phone browser is now showing your adverts instead of error displays.

Good for you as you have another user seeing ads on their phone. Not so good for me. But that is life.

It has now gone back to leaving an error display on my phone browser. Like I posted some time ago. Strange behaviour. Ads not working, then working for a few hours, then not working again.

I can now confirm that this bug is related in some way to ignored people. I have just "unignored" all of the people who were on one of the threads that way not showing up correctly. It now appears back in the lists of threads. So this bug is definitely inluenced by ignored members in some way.

A design feature to watch out for...

When you ignore someone not only do you ignore all of their comments. You also ignore any threads that they have initiated in the past (as well as not seeing new threads created by them in the future). When a list of threads is displayed for you.

So, for example, imagine you have just ignored someone. The board then hides all of their posts on every thread from you. Plus all of the threads they have started when you are looking at the list of threads in the forum. Rather than displaying the thread title with a message showing that the first post is from an ignored member.

In the past you could have been checking and posting to a thread that the ignored person created. At the time you ignore the person that thread is no longer visible to you directly. There are only 2 ways you can get to it:

1. You can search for the thread, then display it.

2. If you are looking at the main index of the board (https://fmttmboro.com/index.php) you will see a fleeting message with the name of the thread. Until it is no longer the top unstickly thread on the board. Then it disappears again.

I can see arguments for and against the software doing this. However it cannot be classed as a true bug. Just a design feature to watch out for.

Isn't that just standard ignore list behaviour? Any forum I've used where I've ignored someone I would expect to not see anything by them, I'm surprised on here there is a prompt that someone who has ignored something has made a post.

There could be hundreds of other people posted on the thread. So why hide all of that stuff? Just because the person who initiated the thread is on your ignore list.

I see also that the only ignore thread option is a third party app. Been asked for for around 10 years now I believe. On this platform.

Because you’ve ignored them, it won’t make sense without the OP. It’s exactly the same in every forum I’ve used over the years, bar the “show ignored content” bit. If you’re going to see their posts still and just hide their replies, you might as well just not block them and mentally ignore them.

Facebook works the same, if you block someone you will never see their posts, replies etc, it’s as if they do not exist to you.

I understand. I said it is not a bug.

The issue for me was there were a small number of threads I had an interest in that were slowly going missing. I did not clock the fact that they were started some time ago by someone I had later ignored.

On this board the option is there to show ignored posts in a thread. It even has a prompt. So my reasoning was that you could just use the same method on the first post in a thread. Rather than have different behaviour in this case.

It is the show ignored content option that pops up on here that makes the difference. There is an argument both ways on what you do with a first post.

If there was no show ignored content message on here I would agree with you.

User interface design sometimes includes consistency of response. There is an inconsistency in this case. Where I think there is no right answer.

I have been thinking about this. To make the UI more consistent they had 2 options.

1. Removed the ignored member post notices. So everything from that user is "ignored" when you ignore them.

2. Show threads started by an ignored member. With the text from the thread header prefixed by something like "Thread from ignored member". Then the contents of the first post on the thread displaying a standard ignored post message. So every post (first threads posts and all other posts) from an ignored member are seen with a warning that it comes from an ignored member.

In terms of UI design style either of these would have been a more consistent approach.

I realise nothing is going to change. So just me musing about this.

PS A long time ago I spent a number of years as an I.T. consultant working for a department of the military that designed UIs for military equipment. We used to build simulators to help them test out designs. So I do have a bit of background in the subject.
