Remembering Ayresome

I will always remember the first match i went to and it was Bolton fifth round of the FA cup a night match in January 78 . Getting to the top of the Boys End steps and gasping at the arena in front of me , a packed crowd , the noise was overwhelming and the green baize like pitch that looked like a billiard table .
There were flagpoles all round the edge of the East End flying their ICI flags proudly . The other thing I’ll never forget is the haze of smoke coming from the crowd from all the ciggys . The sharp floodlights picked it out like a winter mist.
