Just finished it on netflix, i was in my late teen early twenties and remember escorting my sisters mates home to the longlands after she visited as" protection".
Looking now , I could'nt believe the Police incompetance. Really worth a watch

A guy I worked with use to do a great project on the Ripper. It was unbelievable what he knew on the topic and the students would be fascinated by it.

I must give it a watch.

One if the old guys( late 80s) from the bowls club was a bobby in leeds he swore most of the plods suspected sutcliffe but were told to concentrate on geordies

Oh yeah, he was looked at many times but the Senior Investigating Officers we’re fixated on Wearside Jack and refused to consider Sutcliffe.

Talking of Wearside Jack they didn’t touch on his fate. Understand it wasn’t until 2005 that they were able to identify him. A man who led a very sad and drunk addled life. See that he died in 2019.

Yeah they spoke to him a number of times, but between not having a Wearside accent and his wife providing him with an alibi for one of the early attacks he wasn't taken seriously until stopped in his car, with what was probably his next victim.

The lack of computer technology meant it was so difficult to cross reference the amount of times he came up in the investigation using the paper based system they had in place and seriously hampered the investigation.

Wearside Jack cost me a shag. Girl I knew was a student at Sunlun and invited me to visit her digs, no mobile phones then so arranged to meet at a spot. Bit of confusion and while I was hanging about the police moved me on (the whole area was terrified by the ripper). By the time I got to ring her again she’d got back with her boyfriend. Wearside Jack, twât.

Enjoyed the series.

Nine times the police had Sutcliffe in front of them.
They had his saliva.
His Shoe size.
His car had been spotted many times in red light areas.
The five pound note in Jean Jordans handbag.
The photo fit.

Experts and even the FBI advised WYP that the tape and letters were a hoax.

Beyond incompetent.

Probably his greatest crime.

I don’t think they could have done anything with his saliva at that time though could they?

When you say “had him in front of them” do you mean interviewed? As I didn’t think it was that many times? For some reason I think it was either the 3rd or 6th interview when he confessed.

I’m by no means an expert so genuinely not sure about the above points.

Biggest mistake was falling for the hoax despite the survivors stating the attacker had a local accent.

Also not asking to see his the bottoms of his shoes during the 2nd interview. I believe he had exactly the same shoes on that they had obtained the footwear impressions from.

I quite enjoyed it but felt like they spent very little time covering his wife and her role on this whole saga and what became of Wearside Jack.

That feminist was really annoying too, demanding women's rights during the Ripper's reign.

Perhaps her point about blaming the victim was a little subtle for you.
Not at all but demanding that they be allowed out without a chaperone and living their life as normal was ludicrous. Nothing was stopping them from doing it but the Ripper won't be watching your demands and stop killing because you expect it.

The police were horrendous though and their attitude towards prostitutes was beyond belief, almost as though they deserved it.
