Selling stuff to EU countries

Red
Think he’s stating that he expected our Tory mps to be grown ups about the consequences of a hard Brexit (thin deal) and figure out how to trade with the eu which meant as little cost as possible to the consumers of this country
And he didn’t get that because an ultra right wing faction of political people ran the negotiations and this terrible situation is the result
That’s why he is disappointed

I hope this continues as the Tories lose more and more credibility and Brexit gets it’s right ful label of a massive self destructive act by the UK electorate
It can only serve to bring down this government ASAP 👍👍
In simple terms, as I’m too tired, I expected all our MPs on all sides to be grown ups and to put party politics, internal party grievances, self interest etc aside in order to do as I said in pulling together experts etc and working together to obtain a deal as I described whereby both EU and UKcould grow together but as separate entities. I did not expect the pathetic tearing of themselves apart by either party, nor did I expect the EU to be so against a nation state deciding to leave, they are, after all, purveyors and purported of democracy are they not? So I’m disappointed in that. Further, I feel deceived by the blatantly apparent disaster capitalism and corruption currently in play. I am perhaps naive, but I have been genuinely blindsided by this Political and economic coup that is happening. The blatant lies and deceit without shame astounds me. To be honest I am embarrassed and ashamed of what is now going on. It simply never occurred to me that a UK government could be taken over by a cabal hoodwinking the people in such a manner. I am astounded by it. With no disrespect meant, it is what I would expect from a tinpot African regime. We are supposed to be better than this as a nation. It’s appalling.

I would hope we can one day become a forward thinking centrist state, where capitalism is the driver but capitalism with a social conscience and responsibility, where people and businesses can ‘Succeed’, but not to the detriment of society as a whole, and whereno-one is trampled over or left behind. What is so wrong about that?

Is there a European example of such a state? The Nordic countries have done very well as socialist states that have allowed capitalism to exist. The federal democracy in Germany similar.

I wonder if there would have been an EU or a federal democracy in Germany if ...

Did you not follow the discussions prior to the referendum where every expert in every field said it would be a disaster?

I started out thinking I'd vote leave (in a Lexit-esque manner) but fairly quickly realised that there wouldn't be an option to do anything 'sensible'.

Not meaning to have a dig. Just curious as to how you got to the polling-booth without knowing there was a 90% chance that Brexit would be the disaster it is. The current situation was predicted. In fact is was the common consensus as to what the reality of Brexit would be and was labelled "Project Fear" by the charlatans running the show.

Have you done anything (writing to MP etc?) to make get your regret and disillusionment heard (again, not saying you should, just wondering)?

The simple fact is its easier to grab people's attention with a quick soundbite or three phrase word. When you throw in the fact you can outright and blatantly lie nowadays meant I can certainly waste why people voted brexit in 2016. Words on buses and feeding on bigotry are much easier campaign strategies than common sense and economic predictions.

I can't, however, understand anyone still supporting brexit now. Now the lies have been exposed. Now project fear his become project bleedin' obvious. It staggers me that people are still defending their unicorn as day after day the whole thing unravels. I don't understand this.

I did up to a point but trusted those in power to act in the best interests of the nation as a whole. That coupled with my opinion on the EU superstate lead me to vote leave. It was naive of me and I am disappointed at myself as said earlier for ‘being taken in’ and trusting. Contrary to what people may think given I voted Brexit, I am not without intelligence. I regret very much what my vote has lead to for the nation as a whole. I still hold out hope that there is a way out of it in the form of a centrist state in the manner I outlined perhaps moving forward from the next election but I do Now wonder what damage will have been done by these grifters in the intervening 4 years. As I said, I can only admit my ‘mistake’ and hold my hands up and apologise, and I do. I regret what has become of it all very much. What we have now is not the picture sold and I should have seen it coming, but I naively had faith that the right things would be done for the nation as ive explained. Given my vote again, and knowing what I now know, seeing what I see, I would vote remain. Hindsight is 20:20.

my MP lives in the same road as my parents and I talk to him often.

I think that was one of the main things that swung me away from Lexit. The idea that the left might actually be in power to enact reasonable change was slim to none and I don't trust the Tories to do anything in the nation's* interest. Coupled with the lead Brexiteers e.g Farage, Banks et al, it just seemed like a car-crash in the making.

Thanks for the response.

I sold a record to a chap in Germany for £15 ex VAT.

He just told me he had to pay import VAT 20% - which is fair enough - but also a 25 euro handling fee.

So the record he bought has actually ended up costing him more than double what it was listed for. I can't see him buying from me again.

Which means my sales to Europe will plummet if this carries on, and European sales usually account for about 25-30% of my business.

Can anyone who voted Brexit please explain why this is a good thing?

I have to say I think you're being very short sighted. In 50 years time I'm sure this won't be a concern for you.

Thing is, I didn’t view the issue as being party political, Tory/labour. I (stupidly) believed it to be bigger than that and expected that, should a leave vote win, the nations ‘leaders’ ie all MPs of all sides would put aside party politics and work cross party with a team of appropriate experts in the relevant fields for 2 years to negotiate in the nations (ie the nation as in its peoples) best interests with the EU to agree a mutually beneficial deal (as I’ve previously said). I don’t think that was too much to ask / expect of public servants. After all that is what ‘leaders’ (or simply adults if you will) and statesmen and women would do ( ie.’ This is a biggy, transcends petty differences, we better put it front and centre and deal with it professionally”). Sadly, it has since been proven by their actions that we don’t have any leaders, we just have a rabble of squabbling children who have been over-ridden by a cabal of self-interested charlatans/grifters/thieves with no interest whatsoever in our nation as a whole.

my naivety embarrasses me. I feel betrayed by my previous beliefs that our politicians are public servants serving the nations interest (ordinarily in line with their parties ideals obvs) and worthy of the letters ‘MP’ after their name and the words ‘Right Honourable’ in front of their name. Sadly they aren’t.

The saddest part of all is that it's irreversible.

We can vote the government of the day in or out every 4 years or so but this is permanent.

I'm sure there'll be a movement to rejoin sometime in the future, but, sadly, it won't happen in my lifetime.

Is it me or are some people being a little hypocritical criticising a poor Dutch border guard for treating his border the way he sees fit?
