At a time of crisis this Government is FAILING

Interesting - what do you base it on, particularly in light of those comments in the Washington Post, and criticism from the WHO?

Is that the same WHO who didn't declare it a pandemic until March 11? (15 days ago)
Talk about the pot and kettle when it comes to dithering. There were 118000 cases in 110 countries at the time.

WHO are a waste of space with a corrupt leader who has had to defend himself more than once against accusations in his own country.

His main advice has been test test test. Good luck with the 1.3 billion in India at 250 quid+ a time.
Still he does read out loud well from a prompter.

Id suggest New York and the USA focus on their own failings and problems.
I don't say that in a nasty way. I actually don't mind Trump. I think his presidency has been ok. He has failings though and has made his own comments on this situation which now look wrong and misguided. Maybe they should concentrate on problems on that side of the water.

Come on here and say anything derogatory about china, their leaders, the lies, their eating habits, the reason this virus started and your shot down, yet it's applauded and agreed with when other countries slag off our elected leader in this time of national crisis.

Pathetic

Good try. No comment.

Spanishman , it's not yet illegal to have an opinion different to yours yet is it?

I utterly despised both Boris and Trumps agenda, but acknowledge that Trump has a positive rating in the US, that does not make 50%0of then stupid.

Yes - it’s that WHO. I think there is only one.
Love your logic - they may have made a mistake so can’t criticise anyone else.
Not sure where that gets us but hey ho

Did you not see this from me?

"Of course we can have opinions and express them. However, as yet, we do not have conclusive proof. (Apart from with the charge of deliberately neglecting the NHS since they last took over power 10 years ago). "

Of course there has to be key workers available to work; we need utilities, transport etc but it had to be just absolutley key workers.

Instead of taking control of the situation Johnson actively fluffed and dithered when the cost is likely to be thousand of unneccesary deaths.

How anyone can defend him is beyond me.
I'm not defending anybody but my myself when YOU said I was complicit in state run killings because I have a different opinion to yours.
Are you taking notice of the government's advice to stay in?
Did you panic buy last week?
Were you one of the many people on the pubs and bars on Friday night?

I would also add to the statement I repeated above as follows:

We have to wait and see what happens in the next week or two. We should know a lot more by then. So I suggest that people (including myself) keep their powder dry.

Of course we can have opinions and express them. However, as yet, we do not have conclusive proof. (Apart from with the charge of deliberately neglecting the NHS since they last took over power 10 years ago).
I agree with that - a global review of what happened and each countries approach can only be evaluated once this is over. I dare say our approach won’t be the best but also not the worst.

I hope you are right FatCat in as much as our performance isn't as bad as I and others think.

Yes, I am taking notice... no I didn’t panic but... and no, I wasn’t out. I have two type 1 diabetic children, my mum has COPD as does my father in law.

Does that answer your question?

I’m not sure the gvt is failing there is a hell of a lot to resolve and im sure many are working around the clock. The solution for the self employed should come today which is t a bad turn around given the complexity of that particular issue and the different versions of self employed that exist.

It’s easy to bash the gvt -
Could they have done better ?sure, however I think they are also performing well in aspects of their approach.

when this is all over we can only begin to analyse the pros and cons of our approach. How do you measure success in this unprecedented sce

You measure performance by comparing stats with other countries FatCat. It has been said before, after this is over may be too late and jwe are left counting the cost in lives of thepolicies put in place. So in this regard I couldn't disagree more.

I do tend to agree that the salary/financial package that the government are putting in place does look very good, and I say that without knowing the implementation details. At a high level it looks good.

Your absoloutely right, but human nature being what it is, we are all looking for any ray of hope, which is understandable.
Yes totally agree, any little bit of positivity, goes a long way
Lets leave the bickering for another day

Stay safe everyone

It doesn't seem like the government has done as well as it could have, but we will only really know when this is over and a thorough independent review is carried out, not just here but around the world.

Sensible posts won't stop the keyboard experts and radicals playing politics.

There is no way of knowing if lockdown will even work so stating now that the government has failed is moronic at best. What do you think will happen after lockdown? Everyone will go back out and the virus will start to spread again. Herd immunity has been laughed off as a ridiculous concept but it is the only way that this will be solved in the long run unless we have a vaccine. Lockdown does nothing but slow down the spread until a solution presents. That solution can only be vaccine or immunity and vaccines are reported to be a year away. Herd immunity will occur much sooner albeit there will be more deaths than in a perfect lockdown scenario until a vaccine is available. Ideally we will test and find that more people have had it with no symptoms and the rate of spread will slow down so the NHS can cope more easily but it's very unlikely we're anywhere near that stage yet.

Blaming people for mass murder is probably the stupidest thing I've ever read on here and there has been some serious competition over the years. There have been many government failings, the primary one is the state of the NHS that this virus has exposed. Hopefully we see some long term reaction to the funding of the NHS when this has finished.

There are reasons that different countries have had different outcomes. ITaly keeps being talked about because it is the worst case. They have a very old population and they have a very high number of smokers. 50% of their patients that have required intensive care have been under 60. This could very well not happen over here because we don't have the same rate of smokers as Italy do. Spain have a similar situation. China has the pollution issue. We might find that we have fewer cases than them in the long run. It might be places like London with particularly poor air quality suffer the most.

There are just too many factors to blanket say that there is a right approach. There is definitely a wrong approach, which would have been doing nothing at all and at least we haven't done nothing. Even if some people haven't been compliant. I actually think the government have been quite good on a few things, even if I don't agree with all of their decisions. They have been open, the daily briefings have kept people informed, they have changed quickly (abandoning the herd immunity idea after new data from Italy was available). The time for criticism and reflection though isn't now, it will come but I don't believe they are prioritising their friends or being reckless with lives. They are doing what they think is best in an unprecedented situation. Shutting down the economy completely could have very serious long term consequences which could lead to more loss of life in the long run. We just don't know.
