George Russell in a merc - tops both time sheets in practice

He’s yet to record a single point in the Williams after 37 races.

Yet today in Lewis’s car he tops the charts in both FP1 and FP2.

Quali will be interesting.

Surely this now shows how ridiculously dominant this merc is and why F1 needs to bring back parity.

A friend of mine put money on him the day Lewis was announced as missing this race to win. Only a daft quid.

5000/1.

Go on George lad.

It would have been interesting to see him against Lewis side by side to really see the difference. It is partially backing up what we’ve seen for a long while.

1. Russell is a much better driver than his current car is showing although we keep getting glimpses of his talent with his constantly good performances in qualification, especially evident against latifi.

2. Bottas is run of the mill and his performance, or lack of, in a car he has been driving for 3 years against someone who has drove it for 3 hours is massively highlighting this. Poor temperament too sinking under pressure. Must be a big doubt for a renewal after next year if what has happened today is continued for the next 2.

Tried to do the same thing but they had it suspended before I could get the bet through. They will still try to find a way out of paying I’m sure

Wouldn’t look too far into today, with the practice sessions you never know what engine modes they used, how much fuel they had in etc. It still wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to see Russell win, think he is already one of the best on the grid, when he does eventually get in that merc I imagine he will have an impact similar to what Leclerc did. Big day for Bottas tomorrow...

Probably. He's a massive F1 nut and put the bet on as soon as they announced on twitter Lewis had tested positive. Lucky guess. Think it's Bottas' race to lose personally.

Delighted for George but it does now widen the debate surely.

Don't think anyone is debating that Mercedes currently has the best car.

Lewis Hamilton is the best driver in the best car, consistently. Put him in every other car and he might not win but would do better than their current drivers.

I hope Russell wins, it would give him a huge chance of replacing Hamilton when he does retire.

Well said that man. I think the fact that Russell is Mr Saturday shows that he’s no slouch. Can position a car spot on (when not crashing trying to warm up his tyres) so he’ll be super quick in a car that actually has some aerodynamic grip.

I hate to say this because I really like the guy. Russell’s quick pace in fp1 doesn’t in any way shape or form lessen the spectacular achievements of Lewis Hamilton. It does, sadly, make people question Bottas. He’s clearly been given all the tools to be able to win a championship and, despite possibly finishing second this year, he’s got nowhere near to Hamilton. Give Checo his job!

I'm really uncomfortable with the inference that 'anyone could win in that Mercedes' when quite evidently they can't. Bottas being the obvious example.

Hamilton has won the championship when he's had the best car and he's won it in seasons when he hasn't had the best car.

The best drivers end up in the best teams that's just life.
