Snow Centre

Indeed, noting on social media stating it has been scrapped

Statement on incidents on teesside and tees issues on FB

What’s Happening With The Snow Centre Plan?
In the last few weeks quite a few people have asked me about this.
The project is a private development and not something that Middlesbrough Council is delivering.
But over the last 5 years or so the council has committed strong resources of time and money to help make it become a reality.
This is because it would be an incredible thing for our area - a genuine game changer.
Sadly though it looks like the project doesn’t stack up financially for the owners.
The only way the snow centre could possibly happen is if Middlesbrough Council and perhaps Tees Valley Combined Authority financially guaranteed about half the £40m needed to build it.
We have thought long and hard about whether we should guarantee the finance the project needs.
But the possibility of losing £20 million on this exciting but speculative £40 million project feels way too much of a risk.
Having said this, we’re still talking with the owners of the project and they are working hard to find a way to make it work out financially.
We will definitely continue to talk with them and we absolutely are happy to support the scheme financially so long as the maximum potential loss for us is reasonable. But right now that’s not the case.
I’ll keep you up do date with any progress.

So its not been scrapped yet. Talks are still ongoing

Doesn’t look like it’s going ahead. Apparently it doesn’t stack up financially for the developers.

such a shame but seemed inevitable from the very beginning.
Apparently it was shelved due to the fact that there are far too many snowflakes in Teesside already.

This was a non starter from day 1

Obviously, the developers are in with the wrong crowd when it comes to getting financial backing from the Tees Valley Mayor?

No. Its a waste of everyones time and money as stated. See the comment regarding the many announcements when it would start/be finished etc.

The developers are want of a better word “cowboys” are you suggesting they should get money Tees Valley to continue with this charade?

I think it will get binned :(
They will probably use the planning approval and enviro reports for something else, nowhere near as exciting.

No way is anyone building anything risky like that, with Covid and a Brexit no-deal around the corner, they won't have the funds to be tied up that long anyway.

Is it snow centres full stop that you say wont be a success or is it just that it wont be a success in Middlesbrough?

I think there is around 6 snow centers around the UK and they are all doing well.

It was this specific plan for Middlesbrough that I was dubious of, the numbers that their business plan required to function seemed unsustainable, their lack of any history in this kind of development or partners with that requisite experience, has been said it above it was a small off the shelf company with no turn over, assets or track record that made me question the validity of the scheme.

I’m certain a properly resourced, planned and executed project could be a success, I just don’t think the plan for this venture was that project.

The visitor figures that they were quoting never stood up to scrutiny. They were basing everything on 2 million visitors a year.... that’s 5,500 people every single day, 365 days a year.

The “company” (and I use that term loosely considering it was one woman and her dad based out of a house) had done no firm research and had not checked the other snow centres in this country to see their visitor numbers ( Manchester gets a million a year at best)

They have taken the council for a ride and took a lot of money for developing an idea that was never workable.

Yet again a waste of tax payers money

The best thing to do is bin the idea completely and actually charge them with fraud
2m a year? Surely some mistake?
The snow dome in MK - one of the biggest in the UK boasts that they have welcomed 2m visitors since they opened in 2000!!!!

"their lack of any history in this kind of development or partners with that requisite experience, has been said it above it was a small off the shelf company with no turn over, assets or track record that made me question the validity of the scheme."

Surely this is what qualifies for central government financing in current climes.

It was all downhill from the start...... some may say an uphill struggle to see how this project can get off the ground now

Some twist and turns probably along the way

I think some of the decisions were off piste, especially slaloming the difficult financial obstacles.

hope there isn’t too much of a political snow storm over this.
