What irks you about modern society?

Some cars with an automatic 'electric handbrake' put the brake lights on without any input from the driver, mine for example. I suppose it is a mod con.
Yea I got that wrong, why is that though, surely they shouldnt add something which has the break lights on all the time when the car is sat at the lights, it just doesnt make sense

My cars is paddle gears and automatic thats how they are now, I always use the brake at lights junction etc, otherwise it will inch forward.
I have a carry on driving a clutch car now, to old fashioned dinosaurus clutchus, I wouldnt choose a car with a clutch anymore:)

People who dont appreciate life when they haven't any real hardship. Life is very short and you only get one go. So smile and get on with it

If you arent poor
arent being abused physically or emotionally.
Your family is in good nick.
In good physical health.

People who tell people to smile and get on with it irk me. How about we let people feel however they feel about their problems.

It's this attitude of 'you should be happy' that often shames people into silence when they feel bad and don't know why.

It's not the misfortune Olympics and you're allowed to be sad, discontent or whatever else it is you may be feeling without judgment. Everything is relative and your feelings are valid.

I wish people would learn to appreciate what they have a little more, yes, but in a mental health crisis we should be considerate in how we express that.

Being grateful for what you have and being sad despite a lack of 'perceived' hardship are not mutually exclusive.

In terms of what irks me.

Post truth world, everyone's an expert and its leading to the normalisation of conspiracy theories.

People equating the value of their opinion with facts.

Lack of critical thinking.

The Americanisation of both our politics and our society generally.

A fundamental misunderstanding or ignorance of democracy.

Neoliberalism and people's lack of care for their own and their colleagues working rights.

Lack of community.

I could go on.

Stiff upper lip, well I think that`s a fair comment, but depends on the weight of the burden I suppose.
Everyone has a different threshold, some things cant be put right, other things can be overcome, and other things aren`t the mountains they are made out.

Is your view is there doesn't have to be a strong or big reason.? and is that the way society views thing in general now?
My question to that is who defines what is 'strong' or 'big'?

People being scared to make independent decisions
- afraid to stick their heads over the parapet
- unprepared to think
- scared to stand up and be counted
- conditioned to be subserviant

In general terms is much of this really modern life or is it just as it has always been? I imagine that people have always been selfish and inconsiderate, which is what a lot of the irks relate too.

Same with technology. Old people have always complained about its impact on the young. In the way that people now rail against smart phones (despite perhaps using one to post on this thread) my grandparents always reckoned that rather than watching telly we should have been reading books. I suspect their grandparents felt that any time children spent reading books would have been better spent shinning up the inside of a chimney.

Maybe it is just as it has always been.

This one. London-led too.

Selfish cyclists who think it's OK to have no sort of lights on their bike, while weaing dark clothing

People who expect me to consider and take their opinions seriously, but can't be bothered to read through what they've typed before pressing 'Post reply".

Just on this page - weaing, subserviant, whatevers, break lights, youre.

Sorry to say, but this forum is an awful indictment of the English education system.

No plenty of other things irk me too, but I tend to forget them as I wade through spelling mistakes, apostrophes scattered like confetti and muddled thinking on here. It doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things I suppose, but I don't understand people not making their best attempt to be lucid.

Chuffing hell. Posters aren’t trying to be the next Heaney, Ishiguro or Camus. Just relax and appreciate the fact you are intellectually superior to the majority of us morons who do not meet your standards.
