On this day 1929 George Camsell

Scored Boro's 53rd football league hattrick since turning pro in 1899, the 39th at Ayresome Park & his 10th of his Boro career when the mighty Boro beat Derby 4-0 in a 1st divison fixture, my figures are not including 4, 5 goals in a single game, just the 3 in one game

GC went on to score 29 goals in 34 games, that season, some striker (y)

The season he scored 59 goals we were awarded 9 penalties, GC took 3 & scored all, why he didnt take the others throughout the season is unknown, maybe, unrecorded, he'd missed a couple

Dixie who?

I think all these old players are getting lost in history a bit now.

Even the likes of Matthews, Mortensen, Finney and of course, the best of them all, Wilf Mannion, are not talked about much these days as the generations move on and that is inevitable.

But it is up to Boro fans to keep the memory of our own heroes alive and George Camsell was our greatest ever centre forward.

Agreed, and just for a bit of trivia, who is our all time greatest goalkeeper in terms of appearances?

I recall reading he missed one in a League game and then refused to take any more. If he had, he would have had the record.

That could be the reason, I thought that myself also, he took his final penalty that season on the 12th feb, the Boro were awarded another 4 penalties after that date with 3 different scorers

George DOES hold the record for goals in a season
Dean 60 league 0 FA cup total 60
Camsell 59 league 4 FA cup total 63
Dean took all Everton penalties Camsell took no Boro penalties
In my opinion George holds the record!

9 England games 18 England goals
9 games you ask? Teams were picked by committee. Bet there was no geographical bias then!
Ask your mates who has best goals per game record for England no one will mention the great George Camsell

There is a superb bit of old footage showing George Camsell at Ayresome Park doing the toss up at the start of the match, presumably 1930’s, can‘t remember where it is on YouTube now but definitely there somewhere.

I‘m sure I recall there is a bit of footage of Tim Williamson somewhere as well.

Unbelivable England record when you think the ratio of goals per games & he wasnt considered a regular starter

GC scored 3 penalties that season, without checking he could have taken more & missed hense stopped taking penalties, he also missed the 1st 4 games of the season too

Thanks Erimus. I forgot about him missing those games but they would still say
Yes but it wasn't in the top division.

Surely you’re aware there was no football before the Premier League in 92 !
