Support for Scottish Independence hits 58%

Both parties are against another referendum, the Tories more than Labour, so it'll be some time before the real poll takes place.

I wonder what's stopping the Scot's taking a leaf out of the Brexiteers play book and just holding a referendum of their own, declaring themselves an independent sovereign nation and then reneging on the 1707 Treaty of Union.

I imagine that the SNP, if/when they win a sizeable majority next yea, will take a leaf out of the Catalan playbook and hold a referendum without Westminster's approval. Sparking an old fashioned constitutional crisis and probably some overtime for South Yorkshire Police.

Doesn't that preclude them from being recognised as an independent state by the UN and therefore the EU and all other countries?

I don't know. But they are historically a separate country rather than a part of a country just deciding to separate themselves (like Somaliland or similar)

I'm sure there's no end to the issues it creates, but it'll create such acrimony that it'll just reinforce the nationalist narrative.

Noone in Scotland has a proper plan in regards to how a country whose economy is based on dwindling oil supplies, fish and tourism is going to survive outside the Union - but that hasn't stopped them.

I'd rather be lead by nicola and not Alex de fefel
I'd rather be led by a koi carp than either of them.

Let Scotland have it's independence. Bring the naval bases to Teesside and Newcastle. RAF Leeming can add RAF Losiemouth's staff and inventory to its base. Catterick can expand into an even bigger army base. Oil is a dying trade so not even fussed over losing access to that.

I really do not see how their country would be economically viable on their own.
Smaller countries don't have to follow the economic model of UK. Denmark and Sweden have GDPs per head 30% greater than the UK. Austria has 25% greater. What's special that those countries can thrive compared with the UK?

Perhaps Starmer is more likely to have a pact with the SNP to get into power, and so it could be Labour which offers the referendum.

Correct, that is more likely therefore Labour ultimately breaking up the union, exact opposite to the thread title. Would labour voters sacrifice the union to take up office?

Lower populations and higher taxes. It was never going to end well for the UK when we opened the doors and encouraged uncontrolled low paid and therefore low taxed immigration especially when they require the same level of public services as everyone else.

Not been to Sweden but could live in Norway, it’s remoteness and sparseness especially around Lofoten is beautiful, not to mention the openness of the people and the lack of crime. It’s the only place I’ve been to where I haven’t even bothered to take my rods and reels of the boat in the evening as I knew they wouldn’t get nicked. The only downside is it’s £8 a pint but you will never have to pay for any fish, even someone who’s never held a rod and reel can fill a freezer with Cod there.

Fcuk them. If they want to go, let them. Tell them to pay for their own prescriptions, their own tuition fees, their own car park fees and tell them to pay back the billions they owe us and that they won't be keeping the pound. And what will they do when the 10 years of oil runs out that they keep pushing as their future
