Who was our best Keeper?

For sheer consitency has to be Jim Platt?
Don't ever recall him making the howlers you see the so called elite keepers make nowadays.
His only downfall was I never thought he was that good at saving penalties.

Pears was some signing👍. I probably only saw him in the flesh for a couple of seasons and only young.

I remember when he would have been called up for England and got crocked. I just remember him pulling off various worldie saves.

You don't realise how important a top draw keeper is. It's all about forwards etc.

I have to say Randolph was pretty top draw. He made some stunning saves in a side that struggled for goals. So usually important saves at 1-0 or 0-0. We've had 3 keepers since he left and none anywhere near as good.

In my time Schwarzer by far and away but my time won’t be as far back as most on here. Still think he will win the overall vote though

How often does this appear as a thread on here ...

Depends on who you were brought up on kevin poole made stephen pears look like peter shilton but from my era 1989-to date gets my vote especially given the young back 4 he had infront of him in the 1980s

Likewise we went from jason steele to shay given (shame he opted to warm stoke's bench than come here for another year or 2)

Everyone remembers schwarzer's penalty save but what about all his howlers over the years ...

I don't mind these threads. It takes you back to times when you were young and you can chat about former greats👍. It's clearly very subjective and more so what when you were born.

It's more refreshing than talking about covid and masks. We used to talk about 'left wing and right wing' on here. I'd click thinking Ripley or how Comfort got injured. I don't bother now as it's probably about politics😉

And thats why I never went for Schwarzer. A fantastic shot stopper but regularly had 'moments' and wasn't always in tune with the back line. Also his decision making at corners was sometimes a bit iffy.

Schwarzer, without hesitation. Played most of his career at Boro at the top level and was both a great **** stopper and brilliant in the air.

Pears was a great keeper too, but not on the same level at Schwarzer.

I'd disagree with that, I'd say Pears was the better shot stopper, while Schwarzer was better in the air and had more of a commanding presence.

Some of the saves Pears made were beyond ridiculous.

Crossley was superb. Didn’t put a foot wrong. I’d have played him even when the bug Aussie was fit.

I am surprised the question needs asking, although, I guess a good many wont have seen the great JIM PLATT in action. He was a super keeper in an era of super keepers.

After Platty, again, no question, Schwarzer. He really commanded his box and plucked the ball from many a forwards head. His main weakness was his kicking.

3rd I will say Pearsy, not that tall, but very agile and an incredible shot stopper.

Crossley was excellent in his cameos as was Given in his loan spell, but has to be the first 3 mentioned in order.

Pears for me too though I reckon nostalgia definitely plays a part! I was only a kid but always wondered why the big teams never came in for the likes of Pears & Slaven? I mean, there can't of been many better keepers in the old 2nd Division and Slaven scored for fun. Nowadays they would be snapped up by the premier league teams surely!

Ah, happy memories. The Schwarzer Conspiracy - he has a clause in his contract that says he has to play if fit, didn't you know?

Crossley was a good shot stopper and a genuinely nice guy but better than Skippy he was not. For evidence track their respective careers after leaving us.

I've seen Platt and every keeper since and without doubt in my mind Mark Schwarzer is the best we've ever had and one of the best I've ever seen. Closest would have been Shay Given. All keepers make mistakes and keeper mistakes are often costly. You have to remember that changing the rules on passing back to the keeper affected a lot of keepers and makes it difficult to compare stoppers from different eras. Would Jim Platt have been comfortable dealing with a chest high back pass from Curtis without using his hands?

I’m just saying, I’d have played him for longer. Including when Schwarzer was back from injury.

For me Jim Platt, all day long
