should we have closed the borders?

It is madness really. Given you can have it for 14 days without symptoms by the time we knew about it it was already too late to do that. Would have caused even more problems for the economy.

Italy was in the same position two weeks ago as we are today. Should we learn from them at get two weeks ahead of their position?

No, as I said it’s out in the wilds now. Closing the borders will affect us financially

Financially in 2 weeks when we are making the decisions Italy are now wont it cost us just as much or more financially?

In this day and age with technology do people really have to travel 'to get the deal done?'

Its a given that those that have certain skills need to be at the site where ever it is worldwide of course and those would be free to travel out. We would have to set up an area of decontamination or staging area before they are allowed back in.

We may visit this thread in months to come and think maybe we should have!

Considering that it's only a couple of days ago that Italian airlines were landing in this country and Cheltenham is going ahead with people and horses coming and going from all over the world, are we really taking enough precautions ?
I am not really criticising because life is there to be lived but these are facts.

Ok I admit, we SHOULD have closed the borders, two weeks before we knew there was a problem. Far too late now.

We are an Island!

Sould have closed the borders already. May seem madness but look at Italy now.

There seems to be no way ( 911 excepted - mostly just US ) that air travel will ever be grounded - even if they fly empty apparently ( to keep slots) - allowing people to fly willy nilly all over the world does seem to be a bit daft - targeted travel would perhaps work - but looks far too late now

No I think by the time we knew it was a problem it was too late to close the borders. The genie was already out of the bottle.

If we shut the borders 2 weeks ago people would have been up in arms. The medical advice wasn’t to close them and that’s what people would have been quoting and that it was a massive over reaction

One person has led to over 10,000 infections in Italy and over 600 deaths. Closing borders isn't a solution. It's what you do within the borders that's important.

That’s hindsight for you. Those who might not have been affected if we did wouldn’t know that and would just castigate the government just as you are doing for not closing them. Can’t win

That's why we need a brave government. Thought it embarrassing at how the CMO has looked more sheepish with time. Two weeks ago we'd already gone from contain to delay but now it might happen in another week.

What we need is an understanding public not one that shouts down the government no matter what they do. If they closed the borders people screaming it’s not even as bad as flu and total over reaction as business is affected. They don’t do that and people say well that’s they should have done. They government have access to the best medical information and I’m sure have acted appropriately according to that

Governments always get shouted down, no matter what colour.

They government have access to the best medical information and I’m sure have acted appropriately according to that

They've admitted they haven't as they have introduced non-science (economics) into the situation . . . badly.

I’m happy to criticise the government when it’s due and from what I can see it’s lacking in so many areas.
However I find it very difficult to criticise in the handling of this case. We are dealing with a disease that the entire world was unprepared. Even the biggest experts are still studying it: they don’t quite know the transmission rate, nor the death rate, nor how the virus survives on surface los and for how long and at what environmental conditions. Therefore the government has to make decisions on how to deal with something that we don’t know how well it spreads, how bad it is, or how long it will be around for. There’s literally no right answer to this one
