Great old industrial photos

Got me looking for old photos of the area and found this odd little site

Apparently Billy Scarrow was a Redcar entertainer who used to run a show called "The Optimists" on Redcar beachfront between the wars, born in Grangetown in 1899, there are some interesting photos and other stuff on the website

Yes he features in several books about places like Saltburn, running his own entertainment and theatre troupe.

And further googling revealed a thread on RMWeb (The model railway site)

Steel Making on Teesside

Loads of photographs (obviously with a strong nod towards the Railways of the area) maps and drawings, from reading some of the thread I'm not sure if a model was built though someone had modelled Skinningrove Iron Works virtually which looks pretty effective

The 'virtual model' reminds me of when the Gazette showed a model of the proposed new Redcar works early 70s. It woud be interesting to see it again. The complex was going to be the mother of all steelworks with two or three blast furnaces, multiple BOS plants and mills iirc. To accomodate it all needed land reclamation, dredging the Tees, (which led to Redcar beach disappearing one night) and the loss of a wetland. The scheme was cut back and only the ironworks was realised, having a much bigger footprint than the old Redcar works, which had fully integrated steelmaking.

Have you driven over the Tyne Bridge lately . Blimey theyre letting it go , it’s desperate for a lick of paint 🗣 Geordies, must do better
