Is Lewis Wing treading water...

He's never been good enough.

He is a player that has a pot shot every now and then that works out.

He is currently playing above his level.

Nonsense. He scored 7 goals from midfield in probably the worst Middlesbrough team i've ever seen. Less than 2 seasons ago our team revolved around him.

He's not going to tear up any tree's but he's a dependable Championship midfielder who's currently experiencing a prolonged loss of form.

There's never any grey on these boards. Someone's either ***** or better than Juninho. Perspective needed.

Centre midfielders in the Championship we've had better than him.

Leadbitter
Clayton (sometimes)
Forshaw
Robson
Besic (that pained me to say)
Howson
Ramirez
Butterfield

Tav is pretty much like Wing for me as well. Pretty poor most games and then scores a few goals. Both could go for me.
Of all the midfield playing last night Wing certainly wasn't the worst. He was at least as good as Morsy. Taverner is very infuriating it seems every time he receives the ball you know he is going to lose it or play a really poor pass. The whole team is incapable of keeping the ball. Barnsley were much slicker and for a lot of the time had us chasing shadows. I dread to think what Bournemouth will do on Saturday.

I'd love Wing to do well but I can't agree that he's a dependable championship midfielder. His level looks way below that at the moment. The game goes on around him, he doesn't have the engine or decision making, and his passing has gone downhill. When he first came into the team there was that balance - his goals offset his rawness, and he was influencing the game much more.

You've acknowledged that he's out of form though. That's the point. He completely able to play at this level. His consistency is off and he's out of form, but there's no doubt he's good enough to play at this level.

Exactly this! I’m sure these fans who absolutely hammer the likes of wing and fry are the ones who built them up and put them on a pedestal to begin with. There’s no balance with a lot of football fans unfortunately. Hit a poor run of form and it’s “they’re ***** and they’ve always been *****”. I remember cringing at the amount of posts telling us Fry was a £30m defender less than two years ago. The fact is, they may be struggling currently and probably not worth their places in the 11, but lets not right them off for a relatively short run of mediocre form!

It often happens though doesn't it? A player comes in, looks like they are going to be a good player, and they can't maintain it. I'm not sure you can say it's form, he's been playing like this all last year. When does "form" just become the norm?

Wing is totally out of his depth. He has been in and out of the team for over 3 years and has got steadily worse. Last night he looked totally lost and the game just passed him bye. He is not good enough to play at a level that will see us in a play off position.

There comes a point when you realise he isn't out of form, he is just playing to his level.

exactly, he is tactically 5 or 6 years behind where he should be, physicality isn't great, technician he has got a good shot and is a decent passer, but his defensive technique is poor. Psychologically I think he is struggling with the day-to-day demands of professional football, thus his 'form' is poor.

How many of you saying he's dog turd and couldn't get a game in the northern league were saying he had reinvented the art of the midfielder when he first broke into the side.
When everyone was calling him the Northern League Messi, I pointed out some serious flaws to his game and that he shouldn't be getting a game in a top championship side. I'm sticking by that judgment he will be a decent league two player in 18 months.

I see similarities between him and Adam Reach. Both technically talented players with a bit to learn but written off by Boro fans at the first sign of inconsistency. I'm pretty confident he won't be a League 2 player in two years.

League 2? 😂 Calm down pal

Reach was never written off, he was just not physically where he needed to be to play in the prem when we went up and we got a more than a fair offer and took it. Good champo player (not top, but good). Wing is light years behind Reach in terms of technique

We were in the Champ when we sold Reach

When you think though, the important goals he scored. Winner against Stoke, the two against Wigan. Without his goals we'd've been in even worse trouble.
