My first Brexit thread

I said we'd be poorer under brexit. I confess this was going on models of top market and industry experts rather than concrete fact (other than the already weaker pound).

However I am now officially poorer because of brexit. The lady who supplies my cleaners has jacked up the prices due to having a a large amount of staff from the EU and having to fill roles of people going back and cover the losses she'll face in the future.

I imagine this won't be the last concrete evidence of me being poorer under brexit.

I'm confused. Why do the new cleaners cost more than the old ones. With all respect, it's a minimum wage occupation isn't it?

By the way I voted remain.

I doubt it is the amount I pay. They are damn good. It's also the costs incurred having to recruit new staff as lots of the current workforce are going home.

It's what happens when you make it difficult for businesses to find staff. They jack the price up. Apparently it's a price worth paying for sovereignty and blue passports

There are more important things in life than money (unless of course you are dirt poor and then paying work is pretty important).
There are, but Brexit won't solve any of them. We shall all be poorer for it. There are more things in life than money, agreed. However if you're right on the breadline and all of a sudden the cost of living increase dramatically you're pretty much screwed.

As a remainer I doubt brexiters are concerned about the cost of your cleaner.
No but other industries rely on european workers. I'm already poorer and no, brexiters won't care. When the price of food goes up, because farmers are losing their workers too, I imagine the more lucid brexiters (if that isn't an oxymoron) might be a little more interested.

How about doing the negotiations before all this hot air. Nothing has happened yet that results from us leaving . Come back next January.

Is all you have shown is why brexit is a good thing for the lowest paid. Your cleaners are now getting paid more because they don't have to compete for labour via accepting low wages. The person that is worse off is the middle class person employing a cleaner that can clearly afford to be worse off.

Clearly afford to be worse off? Wow. That's just nasty wanting me to lose money.

Thing is it's the start of a collapse. As I mentioned before when the price of food goes up because farmers have to do the same thing you'll be upset. Rather than sneering at someone you think can afford to by financially affected.

Surely you are advocating low paid jobs though possibly below legal limit especially in food. People claim they are happy to pay higher taxes for a fairer society but when reality bites and these business who have got away with paying lowest wages possible might have to pay a living wage people then moan

I don't want you to be worse off. A cleaner is a luxury. If it got too expensive I'm sure you could clean your own house.

Who do you think benefits most from the extra couple of quid an hour; you, the cleaner or the economy? You'd probably save the extra because you can afford to. The cleaner will spend the lot and that benefits the economy more.

Why would I be upset about food prices going up? If you read back through every brexit argument then somewhere along the way you will find me commenting that the middle classes being kept in cheap strawberries by exploiting immigrants isn't fair and if wages have to go up then prices should as well.

This is how the economy can be rebalanced. Raise the wages at the bottom so it benefits everyone in the economy, not just the well off with their cleaners and subsidised fruit.

What a load of absolute bol lox. No one from the EU has had to go back, nor will they, as a result of Brexit. It's more likely that the Polish (or whatever) cleaners you employ can probably earn more back in their own country that the pittance your are prepared to pay. I mean, why should a socialist hypocrite like you feel the need to pay a living wage (or even minimum wage) when you don't have to ?

It probably wouldn't surprise you but I too am happy that it will cost you more money.
