Villa bid for Morgan Rogers

I don't know what the City cut is and the City cut is irrelevant to Villa. They aren't going to pay us an extra £3mil for a player because we owe City a cut. They'll pay what they think he's worth.

I think 8-10mil is slightly above what he's worth and would be good business. If we owe 20% of that to City we've still made a healthy profit.
It doesn't have to matter to Villa, it matters to us and we're the club with the player they want.

I guess it comes down to whether you think Rogers will become that good...

Villa rate him, we obviously rate him as we keep turning down bids for him. I personally think he'll be a great player, but I know flip all.
However I'm happy go with what the professionals reckon and they all seem to think he's definitely got what it takes.

How can you say that Morgan Rogers is worth £15m+ now? Basically the same as what Gyokeres was in the summer,
Nobody is saying that.

They are saying that is what they would need to bid for us to accept now (I personally think £10m would be accepted but the number is irrelevant, that is the point people are making). Nobody is saying that he is worth £15m but they are saying we won't sell him for what he is worth now, we want a premium based on what he might be worth in the near future and because we would be better off having him in our squad now than having his market value in our bank account.

Gyokeres performed at a much higher level than Rogers for a couple of seasons and still went for 20m Euro or £17.1m.

There is an argument that you think he will become a £15m+ player over the next two seasons like Gyokeres did and to hang on to him but there's no way anyone is paying that now. That would be a gamble. Rogers isn't performing anywhere close to that level right now. I don't think he'll get to that level personally.
I agree with you on his current value but it’s not fair to compare him to Gyokeres, who was a full international in the last year of a contract and was probably performing at the level of a £30m+ player. Rogers is only 21 which adds value but if we could get £10m+ for him it would be a very good price.

didn't Gyokeres only have a year left on his contract?

If he had 3.5 years left he would have went for a lot more!

It isn't irrelevant, we have to factor that into our price.

If Villa aren't willing to pay that price then it's no deal.

I'm not sure you're reading what I'm writing as I literally stated "I'm not saying Morgan is currently "worth" £15m, £20m, £30m or £40m" :)

And you're definitely missing the point I'm making when I mention the likes of Watkins and Gyokeres. I'm not comparing Morgan with them as players, I'm pointing out how the current football market works, how teams like Coventry and Brentford didn't cave in at the first sign of interest, how their results benefitted from improvement in the young players they invested in, and how they eventually sold for a lot more than they could have 12 months earlier. Flipping players after 6 months for a profit of £4-5m might help balance the books, but it won't take you into the big time. We need to be thinking much bigger and it looks like the club is doing that, thankfully.

Who knows how Morgan will progress as a player, but most people not called Norman can see vast potential for improvement. Clearly Villa see that same potential. IMO it makes no sense to accept even £10m now as we would be better off keeping the player and trying to get promoted. At £15m, I would consider a sale as this is a lot more than the player is currently worth, but I'd still rather keep him for our promotion push - and the small matter of a potential League Cup Final.

I like him. I've said it on here loads of times that he has massive potential and could be a top player. But I also think there's enough holes in his game that he may never be a PL player. Hence why I think 8-10mil would be a good price for him. Aston Villa apparently haven't even rated him that high with offers of circa 4-6mil being rumoured.

15mil+ in this window = pie in the sky

If it’s pie in the sky then we keep him then. Happy days

Presumably the model relies on a big sale each year. Who do you sell instead?

You wait till the summer when the price might be higher? You also access your squad and see where the club is and what's needed. What the interest in your players is and make a decision. If we don't have a need to sell this minute and we think we could get more in the summer then you keep it.
