Intrepid Explorer…

Pub on Linthorpe Road. I know it from at least ‘96.
Does anyone know the history?
One of Boro’s longest running pubs?

Swatter Carr - This has been a public house for more than a century. Mostly, the three-storey building (which extends along Victoria Road) was the Empire (not to be confused with the nearby Empire Theatre – now a nightclub). The Empire was originally named the Empire Hotel. The building is recorded in the 1891 census as the Swatters Carr Hotel Public House – Swatters (or Swathers) Carr after the isolated farmhouse, first recorded on a map dated 1618.

Was reopened as Chaplins late 80’s I think and my cousin Alec Mac was the first landlord. He left there to become landlord at The Cleveland for many years

It was the Middletown Social Club and then became a pub and function room called Chaplins. In the 1980s I think.
The Jenkins, father and son, had it for a while as a music pub.
I remember Senseless Things playing there at the end of 80s. When I was involved in Mbro Music Collective our PAs strained to cope with the size of the upstairs room but we did use it from time to time. Bigger capacity than old Empire.

The Empire was a great pub in the late, seventies earlier eighties often would meet or start there before going to the match or the Rock Garden

Was originally the “Labour Club”. The first Club I played Billiards for in 1974. Had one Snooker table. Used to be political but got rid of the Labour party and became the Middletown Social Club.

I think this thread is in places mixing up 2 sites.
The old Empire is now a Wetherspoons, but the Labour Club, later Chaplins, now Intrepid Explorer is further up Linthorpe Road towards Albert Park.

Thanks all.
So it was Chaplins until the 90s and now IE. Must make it 30 years old?
Along with Isaac Wilsons and The Central must be one of the oldest in the town centre?
Swatters Carr used to be called the Tavern and the House back in the day(mid to late 90s).
