MP Arrested this Evening on Rape Allegation

Why not named?
When announcing an arrest, police do not normally include the name of the accused. In a case like this, it'll probably be in the papers soon though.

According to the College of Policing's Authorised Professional Practice guidelines:
Suspects should not be identified to the media (by disclosing names or other identifying information) prior to the point of charge except where justified by clear circumstances e.g. a threat to life, the prevention or detection of crime or a matter of public interest and confidence.

If and when a person is charged, the police would normally name them at that point, unless there are reporting restrictions in place or there are exceptional or legitimate policing reasons.

These Tory mps masks slip occasionally (see what I did there)
Boris won’t be long before he something he cronies can’t reframe or defend 👍
Patience

There are also reports that the Conservative Party's chief whip, Mark Spencer, had been aware of allegations - and previously spoke with the alleged victim.

You do realise that in this country you are still innocent until proven guilty in a court of law?
Unless you appear in a newspaper or discussed on a message board forum of course.........
I actually think the accused should be nameless until the end of the trial. However, this isn't the case in this country. Most accused people are named, so why not in this case? I think we already know the answer.

Actually you are only 'presumed' to be innocent because if you are then subsequently convicted of said crime then you could never have been 'innocent'.

Some shameful views on this thread.

Not sure you can tarnish the Conservative party as rapists.

There’s a victim in all of this I don’t see how it’s going to get interesting either

And yet, quite often the accused is kept in prison awaiting trial. So not really 'presumed innocent'.

You do realise that by naming the accused it could also inadvertently name the victim or victims as this is also a reason for reporting restrictions.
