First FA Cup Final since 1968

This will be the first FA Cup Final I have missed since 1968 when I was nearly 7 years old.

The cup final was always a massive event on the calendar in our household and we would all gather round to watch it. My mum would make sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes and my brother and I would spend our pocket money on sweets for the occasion. The girls would be sent packing to my nans

Viewing would start on the Friday night with the players families and locals from each town being interviewed, In the 70’s is here was even a special ‘It’s a Knockout’ against the two teams involved.

Coverage started early again the next morning with cameras being at the team hotels and they would follow each teams coach to the stadium. Overkill some might say, but it was tradition and I liked it.

I understand the reason for breaking with tradition and have sympathy with the clubs, but it is another nail in the coffin of our greatest competition.

I have always felt that the PL are jealous of this competition and have manipulated the FA into sanitising it. The lack of replays pays testament to this.

The main reason for missing it is due to being on holiday, but the other reason is the lack of fans and the sterile atmosphere. I have mentioned on many occasions that I felt the season should have been null and void.

Windy - There was more than that, but I couldn’t be pestered. 🤣🤣🤣

Zero interest today, especially given the two teams and there won't be any fans there. First one I watched was 1976, Bobby Stokes final, and only other I have 'missed' was 1991 (Gazza breaking his leg against Forest) as I was at a wedding. Even arranged my stag do around the 1999 one when Manure beat the skunks:). Mixture of getting old, these strange times and FA Cup losing it's magic?

These posts appear every year, so I’d say it’s mostly just getting old, and the fact that things are always changing and won’t always be like when you were a kid.

Why on earth would you arrange your own wedding around Man U v Newcastle but actually miss the final for someone else's?!🙃

So it is nothing to do with the greatest football competition being ruined!!!

Are you happy with the way it is going?

Remember 83 and the Brighton helicopter landing at Wembley . The captain details “ the eagle has landed “ on touchdown . Great days flicking between the 2 channels .

I don’t even know who’s playing v Chelsea. I only know it’s them because a few pals who support Chelsea are making a day of it at the pub.

I used to love Ghostbusters when I was kid. That’s not as good now either.

The competition has changed, and I preferred it in the 90s of course, but getting angry about it isn’t going to change anything.

Ironically the Final today harks a bit back to the tradition you lament OP. It’s not the FAs fault that there is to be no supporters although accept that the FA Cup sold its soul to commercialism some time ago. Perhaps it could have protected it better.

The BBC are at least showing a full build up albeit on a dedicated channel from 8:30am this morning. I won’t be remotely interested mainly because of the two teams involved and agree it’s going to feel sterile.

We went to the 77 final when Man U stopped Liverpool doing the treble. My younger brother, 13 at the time, hated it because he missed all the build up. He thought being there live spoilt it.

No one is getting angry about it and I find your ghost busters reference silly and immature.

I am only stating that the recent changes have spoilt the competition and these didn’t happen when I was a child.

Always a BBC man. Wolstenholme up to 1967 then Coleman until 1979 and then Motson From 1979 with Barry Davies doing just 1 somewhere along the line.
